Ismaili Muslim Community Exceeds Its Pledge of One Million Hours of Service for Canada.
March 21, 2018 – The Shia Ismaili Muslim community in Canada today will announce that it has surpassed its pledge to volunteer one million hours of service for Canada. The statement, to be made today in the presence of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, commemorates Canada’s 150th anniversary of confederation and the Diamond Jubilee of His Highness the Aga Khan -
celebrating sixty years of his spiritual leadership of the Ismaili Muslim community worldwide.
The one million-hour pledge is the cornerstone of the Ismaili CIVIC 150 initiative, rooted in the community’s commitment to improving the quality of life of all Canadians.
“Our community’s one million hours of service is a demonstration of Ismaili Muslims’ enduring commitment to Canada,” offers Malik Talib, President of the Ismaili Council for Canada. “In communities across the country, Ismailis volunteered as mentors and coaches to build the next generation’s skills. Ismailis also delivered employment and settlement support services to new Canadians, provided care for the elderly, supported anti-poverty initiatives, and maintained natural and public spaces. Volunteerism and service to the broader community are both central to Ismaili and Canadian values, and the Ismaili
CIVIC 150 initiative is a reflection of that.”
As of March 21, 2018, the Ismaili community volunteered a total of 1,127,549 hours of service across the country. Partners included organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Terry Fox Foundation, the Food Bank, Canadian Blood Services, amongst many others.
As part of Ismaili CIVIC 150, members of the community across the country marked the formal launch of the initiative by engaging in a national day of service on September 17, 2017 - Ismaili CIVIC Day. Over the course of the year, members of the community, young and old, engaged in additional acts of service, individually and collectively, to contribute to the one million-hour pledge.
The national milestone exceeding one million hours will be revealed at a special event to be held today at the Ismaili Centre, Toronto celebrating Nawruz, the first day of Spring and the new year for millions of Muslim communities worldwide. Prime Minister Trudeau is expected to join members of various local
communities, not-for-profit Ismaili CIVIC 150 partner organizations and volunteers to commemorate the special occasion around the Nawruz themes of renewal, hope and optimism.
The symmetry between Canadian and Ismaili Muslim values of voluntary service were highlighted by His Highness the Aga Khan in his historic address to the joint session of Parliament in Canada on February 27, 2014:
“I have been impressed by recent studies showing the activity of voluntary institutions and not-for-profit organizations in Canada to be among the highest in the world. This Canadian spirit resonates with a cherished principle in Shia Ismaili culture — the importance of contributing one’s individual energies on a
voluntary basis to improving the lives of others. This is not a matter of philanthropy, but rather of selffulfillment — ‘enlightened self-fulfillment.’”
To celebrate and honour the community’s devotion to Canada, Ismaili CIVIC 150 will continue as an annual legacy initiative and as part of the Shia Ismaili community’s responsibility and commitment to Canada.

A Celebration of the Muslim Festival of Eid al-Adha
by Ismaili Centre, Burnaby
DESCRIPTION
Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, is observed by Muslims around the world in commemoration of one of the greatest trials of faith in the life of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham – upon whom be peace). In Muslim and Judeo-Christian traditions, it is related that, as a test of Hazrat Ibrahim's faith, the Almighty calls upon him to sacrifice his beloved son.
For Muslims today, this holiday renews the importance of making sacrifices in one’s daily lives; such as those of one's time, energy and resources for the benefit others. It is also an opportunity to commemorate the occasion, and come together as one community to partake in festivities and refreshments.
We look forward to you joining us for a celebration of the festival of Eid al-Adha on Friday, August 24, 2018.

Shalom Bollywood Brings Muslims and Jews Together at the Ismaili Jamatkhana in Atlanta
BY ISMAILIMAIL POSTED ON SEPTEMBER 1, 2018
Shalom Bollywood Brings Muslims and Jews TogetherThree Jewish actresses who long ago helped pioneer the movie industry in India unwittingly also helped, in a precedent-shattering program Sunday, to bring Atlanta’s Jewish and Muslim communities closer together.
The actresses are long gone, but last Sunday’s showing of the documentary, “Shalom Bollywood” at an Islamic center in Norcross helped create a rare occasion for the two communities to get together for an entertaining afternoon of mutual understanding. The film also was screened at this year’s Atlanta Jewish Film Festival.
The program was introduced by Rabbi Brad Levenberg of Temple Sinai in Sandy Springs, who is also a board member of the AJFF.

Jamat in France invited to rekindle the flame at the Arc de Triomphe
On the occasion of the centenary of the end of the First World War, the Ismaili Council for France represented the France jurisdiction Jamat at a ceremony to mark the memory of soldiers of South Asian origin, who lost their lives a century ago. Guests at the event came together to focus on unity and cohesion between all peoples.
The memorial event was organised by the Global Organisation for People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) France Métropole, in association with the Indian Embassy in Paris on 15 September 2018, and included the rekindling of the flame of the Arc de Triomphe in memory of those who died for France. The ceremony paid tribute in particular to South Asian troops who fought during World War I, and took place at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, at the western end of the Champs-Élysées in central Paris.

Approximately 2000 volunteers joined forces across Canada to participate in the second annual Ismaili CIVIC Day over the weekend of September 22-23, 2018.
The volunteers cleaned parks and shorelines, served meals at shelters, manned stands at walkathons, baked cookies and made sandwiches for those in need. They performed cleanups of roadways, weeded gardens, volunteered at Habitat for Humanity and much more.
In total, Ismaili CIVIC worked with 26 non-profit civil society organizations.
In Mississauga, nearly 150 volunteers helped with the clean up of Financial Drive and Mississauga Valley Park. Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie joined the park cleaning efforts.
“I see the spirit, the compassion, the passion that the Ismaili community has and the way they give back to the community in so many ways all the time,” said Mayor Crombie.
“It’s that spirit of volunteerism that I think the Ismaili community embodies that is really infectious throughout the greater community.”
Ismaili CIVIC Day was first organized to commemorate Canada’s 150th anniversary since Confederation. In 2017 – its first year – Canadian Ismailis gave over 1.5 million hours of voluntary service.
At Parkway Forest Park in North York, Ontario, MP Geng Tan awarded the Willowdale Jamatkhana Ismaili CIVIC team with a Canada 150 Sequicentennial pin in recognition of the Ismaili Muslim community’s long standing commitment to Canada through volunteerism and civic engagement.
In Edmonton, over 100 individuals braved winter conditions, showing up on a cold, snowy day to help plant trees in Brookside as part of the City of Edmonton’s Root for Trees initiative. Across the country, a total of 2100 trees were planted with the help of Ismaili CIVIC.
Two volunteers, Alim Gilani, 33, and Nadim Valiyani, 35, greeted guests with hot chai while helping organize the efforts. “Edmonton is home to me,” said Gilani. “I have travelled a lot and at the end of the day it is important to come home and give back to the community through such events.”
Fifty-nine-year-old Ferial Jassani came out to plant trees despite the weather conditions.
“Although it was outside my comfort zone, I am here,” said Jassani. She was happy she had a chance to meet many people she would not have had she stayed home.
One young volunteer who also helped with the Mississauga park cleanup, 14-year-old Rania Pirbhai, saw how Ismaili CIVIC affected others: “By setting an example, we may even inspire people,” she said. “Many people walked by and some of them helped us pick up garbage at the park cleanup.”
Mississauga MP Omar Alghabra agreed: “It’s really an example for all Canadians for how a community can come together to improve their local community - physically and socially,” he said.
“It (Ismaili CIVIC) is a great example to all of us.”

Los Angeles area volunteers provide help to Police Department during wildfires
The annual Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) Walk-Run was scheduled to be held at the Santa Monica Pier on Sunday, November 11, 2018. As in prior years on this day, walk organizers envisioned residents of Southern California would participate in the event to learn about AKF programs worldwide, and invest in long-term solutions to improve the quality of life for global communities.
Expected attendees included civic leaders from the City of Santa Monica, the Consul Generals of Pakistan, Indonesia, and Ecuador. Mahira Khan, a Pakistani actress, was also amongst the celebrities who had confirmed attendance to support the AKF Walk-Run. Little did the volunteers and attendees know that as they prepared for the event, nature was going to interfere with their plans.
On Thursday, November 8, 2018, the Woolsey fire began during a day of hot, dry, and windy weather in Ventura and Los Angeles counties. The next day, the authorities announced that a quarter of a million people were under mandatory evacuation orders as the wind-whipped flames raged through scenic areas west of Los Angeles and burned relentlessly towards the ocean, covering much of the area, and even where some Jamati members lived.
Due to poor air quality caused by the fires, and based on the Public Health Department’s advisory to remain indoors, AKF leadership decided to postpone the Santa Monica 2018 AKF Walk-Run.
Given that the goal and mission of AKF is to improve the quality of life of worldwide communities, supporters, and civic leaders within the community recognized the need for continuous support given to AKF. AKF volunteers decided to support the authorities trying to contain fires during this devastating time. AKF and I-CERV volunteers donated 2000 water bottles, 600 sports drinks, and 600 hot meals to the Santa Monica Police Department.
At the end of the day, although the Walk-Run was postponed, volunteers stepped up and provided much needed assistance to the local community’s first responders who were working night and day to fight the fires and evacuate residents. They hoped that residents would experience minimal damage and would all be safe.
