Prince Aly Muhammad visiting Kenya this week
Ya Ali Madad
Leaders should respond to requests from the Jamat. If they don’t, they are continuing to reject pluralism and not respecting Farmans, and thus not respecting Hazar Imam Noorani family and the Jamat.
My additional feedback and requests to LIF AKF AKDN DJI Councils & Jamat are as follows:
1. Introduction
The announcement below (by DJI LIF and AKDN), from the leaders of our Jamat, states that Prince Aly Muhammad and Princess Theresa are visiting Kenya for the Jamat’s institutional work, which is therefore for and on behalf & benefit of the Jamat.
2. Adherence to Guidance and Farmans
Leaders must adhere to the guidance and Farmans of Hazar Imam, which include serving the needs and concerns of all the Jamat with a focus on pluralism, inclusion, and accountability to improve the Jamat’s well-being and quality of life.
Prince Aly, who may be the next Imam, along with Prince Rahim or Prince Hussain, represents the Imam on visits and conveys information to Hazar Imam, who, according to Shafik Sachedina, recently in India said he is fine but currently unable to travel.
3. Importance of First-Hand Information
In today’s post-truth era, direct verification of information and facts by those visiting is even more critical. During this visit, it is vital that Prince Aly and Princess Theresa meet with randomly invited members of the Jamat from various age groups to gain first-hand insights into the community’s issues, concerns, and needs, and to share the work they are looking at. This includes interactions with the young, elderly, parents, and grandparents.
4. Encouragement for Open Interaction
The Jamat should be encouraged to meet and greet without barriers, ensuring open and unsupervised conversations.
Leaders should stop controlling and restricting interactions between the Prince, Princess, and the Jamat. This includes not limiting interactions to a pre-selected few by Leaders, but allowing the entire cross-section of the community to participate, reissues and concerns & provide feedback, and make suggestions, including those who ask questions that leaders may not like or reply to.
5. Ensuring Open and Transparent Participation
Leaders must ensure open and transparent participation from the Jamat direct to Noorani Family too, during this and future visits. If leaders continue to control and restrict access, it indicates a continuing disregard for pluralism and the Farmans which includes our constitution
6. Privacy and Decorum
Regarding privacy and decorum, the Jamat has historically respected these principles during meetings, in Jamat Khannas, and at events, with no incidents reported. They love Hazar Imam and the Noorani family.
If any of the above is incorrect can any Leaders who know please clarify and share

The Ismaili
Prince Aly Muhammad travelled to Gujarat, India and Nairobi, Kenya this month for work that the Aga Khan Foundation is carrying out to create economic opportunity for young people and to tackle climate change.
Prince Aly Muhammad joined the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) at the beginning of this year, following his graduation from Harvard University in 2023. He is working with AKF leadership on several thematic areas with a focus on economic pathways and youth engagement initiatives.
From 31 July to 3 August, he travelled to Gujarat to work with the Aga Khan Rural Support Programme (AKRSP) in India on several projects, including solar-powered irrigation, community forestry, cooperative farming, youth skills development, enterprise creation, and youth employment. The trip followed his visits in July to Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi with Prince Rahim.
AKRSP was established in India in 1983 to address poverty and socio-economic development in the most marginalised rural communities in India. Through intensive community-driven work, AKRSP helps to create new economic opportunities while protecting the environment in more than 3,200 villages across Bihar, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra, benefiting 700,000 households.
Prince Aly Muhammad held meetings with youth micro-entrepreneurs about the expansion of their businesses, upgrading of their skills, and the ways in which AKRSP can better support them. On the environment, a key focus is how to replicate solar-powered irrigation systems to expand the availability of clean energy, increase agricultural output, and improve sustainable water management.
The visit to the Netrang region in Gujarat came 35 years after Mawlana Hazar Imam had first visited the area. Prince Aly Muhammad planted a tree in a microforest a few steps from where Princess Zahra had also planted one 25 years ago. In India and elsewhere, AKDN’s Microforest Initiative works with communities to help plant diverse, rapidly-growing small forests that produce both climate and economic benefits. Jamats in East Africa and South Asia partner with AKDN agencies on this type of work under Ismaili CIVIC.
From 13 to 17 August, Prince Aly Muhammad visited Nairobi, Kenya, for work by AKF and AKFED (the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development) on regenerative agriculture. The Maendeleo programme supports more than 5,000 smallholder farmers in Kenya to reduce cost, increase yields, and improve health, while safeguarding the natural environment.
Prince Aly Muhammad also discussed AKF’s plans to boost household renewable energy use, foster youth enterprise, and take greater advantage of climate financing.
In addition, he visited East Africa Healthcare, a new pharmaceuticals company that, when commissioned, will positively impact health outcomes and add to economic growth in the region; Frigoken, a company sponsored by AKFED, and which is the largest export-oriented vegetable processing company in East Africa; and Diamond Trust Bank’s digital banking and sustainability work.

Congratulations on Prince Aly’s recent appointment to work with the Aga Khan Foundation. As a member of the Ismaili community, a Dai, and the son of His Highness the Aga Khan, Prince Aly’s role is of significant importance for the Jamat. His position is also crucial because he is one of three in line to be the next Imam of the time.
His recent qualification from Harvard underscores the top priority placed on education by Hazar Imam for our Ismaili community, emphasizing the critical need of seeking, & sharing, knowledge inclusively and pluralistically
In alignment with the core mandate of the Aga Khan Foundation and all entities of the Jamat, Prince Aly’s involvement and engagement with AKF and so the community, and youth, will and should prioritize pluralism to overcome the challenges & enable the goals
According to Hazar Imam, pluralism, to enable inclusion, and diversity are a vital prerequisite for achieving the goal of inclusive leadership and best practices in AKF and for all Jamat.
Over the past 30 years, these priorities and goals have faced centralized resistance and rejection, from the controlling top, to down.
Overcoming these hurdles is crucial. Prince Aly will want to be involved, and inclusive leaders will want him to be, in implementing pluralism and all Farmans and goals given by His Highness the Aga Khan, the Imam of the Time.
Will there now be a change in seeking, sharing, and implementing the priority of pluralism, including the Jamat locally to manage their needs and improve the wellbeing and quality of life for all members of the Jamats and their neighborhoods?
If there are any additional insights or information relating to the above that anyone wishes to share in the spirit of pluralism, transparency, and best practices, they are most welcome to do so.
Please pass them on to the team leading this project & Prince Aly, who has recently been actively seen to be involved in AKF initiatives in India and East Africa and is continuing to do so.
Hazar Imam has stated that members of his family are now taking on further roles and responsibilities, and this is one of them.
Below is a link to the latest update on pluralism, detailing its importance, root causes, and implementation based on facts & Farmans of Hazar Imam since 1995.
