Prince Amyn receives Medal of Honour of the City of Porto
At a ceremony in Porto, Northern Portugal on 9 July, Prince Amyn was conferred with the Medal of Honour of the City by Mayor Mr Rui Moreira, in recognition of his patronage of the arts.
The distinction was also presented to Alberto Martins, former minister of Justice and former Member of Parliament of the Socialist Party.
As Portugal’s second largest city, Porto is known for its heritage, industry, and culture. At certain points in its history, the city has been occupied by the Celtic people, the Roman empire, and the Umayyad dynasty, which has lent a diverse character to the urban area. Porto’s historical core was proclaimed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996.
Speaking at the ceremony, which took place at the Mayor’s official residence on the anniversary of the arrival of the liberal army to Porto in 1832, Mayor Rui Moreira said: “Today we present the city’s Medal of Honour to a great patron of the arts with a concern for tolerance.”
Municipal medals aim to recognise distinguished individuals for their personal merits or civic deeds as well as municipal officials for the performance of their duties. The Medal of Honour of the City acknowledges those who have rendered services of exceptional relevance, or who have distinguished themselves in areas of human activity.
The conferral of the Medal of Honour of the City, grants the awarded individual the title of ‘Citizen of Porto’ and the collective entity the title of ‘Benefactor of Porto.’ The Medal of Honour of the City of Porto features an allegory and the heraldic symbol of the city in gold.
Earlier this year, in May, the Mayor of Porto conferred Mawlana Hazar Imam with the Keys to the City of Porto for his contribution “not only to Portugal, but also to Europe and to the world,” and to the betterment of society globally. Upon receiving the honour, Hazar Imam lauded Portugal for building a strong pluralist society.

PRINCE AMYN AGA KHAN sign agreement with Porto 2023-06-06

2023, June 6th: Municipality of Porto and Aga Khan Portugal Foundation sign cooperation agreement
See 14 more photos in the bottom of this article.
The Municipality of Porto and the Aga Khan Portugal Foundation signed a cooperation agreement, in Alfândega do Porto, on Monday, which aims to "promote the quality of life of the population of the municipality, with a special focus on publics and territories with greater challenges". The document was signed by the Mayor, Rui Moreira, and Prince Amyn Aga Khan, even before the "Schools2030 Global Forum", which takes place for the first time in our country.
The agreement aims to "promote pluralism and citizenship through participation, networking and the creation of innovative and sustainable responses", including, among other examples, the "co-creation of a participatory strategic vision for childhood" and the "collaborative participation of education agents (teachers, non-teachers, families, community, researchers, policymakers)" in three age groups - 5, 10 and 15 years old - in six groups of schools in the municipality.
The constitution of "collaborative networks between civil society organizations, and between these and public sector institutions, and strengthening of the Private Institution of Social Solidarity (IPSS) of the municipality" and "parish social commissions of the Social Network of Porto and support in the mapping, consulting and evaluation of territorial approach programs (for example, Escolhas Program) or social development plans of the city" are other purposes in the document.
The agreement, which will be valid for one year and will be the subject of specific addenda or sectoral agreements, also provides for the "promotion and training for active ageing and quality of life of the population and informal/family and formal caregivers", the "promotion of the inclusion of young people in situations of social vulnerability", the "contribution to increasing the participation of young people in the construction of communities and projects to improve the quality of life", the "development of programs that promote the valorisation of diversity, including immigrant population, descendants and ethnic minorities" and the "support and collaboration in the implementation of municipal plans for gender equality and non-discrimination".
Porto's "long tradition of humanism and solidarity"
After the signing of the agreement, Rui Moreira and Prince Amyn Aga Khan were present at the opening ceremony of the "Schools2030 Global Forum", which takes place for the first time in Portugal. "It is undoubtedly prestigious for the city of Porto to host an event of this size and interest, whose organization was, for the first time, attributed to Portugal", said the mayor.
“Our city has a long tradition of humanism and solidarity, of openness and intercultural dialogue, of tolerance and political pluralism, of promoting education, science and innovation”, said Rui Moreira, adding: “Therefore, [the city of Porto] shares the goals of equity, inclusion, and quality that the 'Schools2030' program and the Aga Khan Foundation are promoting in education systems, in the so-called global south”.
For the mayor of Porto, "educational systems need to adapt to the principles of inclusive education, which advocate a teaching-learning process that guarantees the active and equitable participation of all students, regardless of their specific educational needs and their ethnic, cultural, social and biological characteristics".
“A global political commitment is needed to ensure that, also in precarious socio-economic contexts, education develops the potential of children and young people and prepares them for the future life”, concluded Rui Moreira.
Also present at the opening ceremony was the Minister of Education. “We advance in education if we work, if we develop together. It takes practice, but we also need research. We need to show, we need the evidence, the voice of the students, everything that is in the 'Schools2030' program”, assured João Costa.
“It's much easier to say it's impossible, but we have, in real life, people who, every day, show us that we shouldn't be afraid to experiment. No one has the magic key, but you show that this magic is possible”, he added.
Schools2030 Program
The Schools2030 Global Forum will be held for three days at Alfândega do Porto. The Aga Khan Foundation's program is focused on the sustained improvement of education from early childhood to secondary education, delivered by educational agents from ten countries (Afghanistan, Brazil, India, Pakistan, Portugal, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Tanzania, and Uganda) and runs from 2020 to 2030.
The focus of the research, monitored by scientific partners (in the case of Porto, the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of the University of Porto) will be the transition years between the levels of education and teaching, namely the five, 10 and 15 years.

2024, July 2: Prince Amyn Aga Khan visits Houston to review progress on Ismaili Center.
During a short working visit, Prince Amyn met with the Mayor of Houston, the Honorable John Whitmire, to discuss progress on the construction of the Ismaili Center in Houston, the seventh such center in the world and the first in the United States.
Mayor Whitmire and Prince Amyn shared their aspiration for the Ismaili Center to be a place of dialogue, understanding, and learning through cultural and educational events serving all Houstonians.
Ismaili Centers mark the permanent presence of the Jamat. Architecturally unique, each Ismaili Center incorporates spaces for social and cultural gatherings, intellectual engagement and reflection, as well as spiritual contemplation. Like its counterparts around the world, the Ismaili Center Houston will represent Ismaili Muslims and be a place for dialogue, learning, and bridge-building across all communities. It will also seek to promote greater understanding about Islam, Muslims, and their history and civilizations, as well as of the Ismaili community, by highlighting shared values and experiences.
Prince Amyn and Jamati leaders met with the design team, including lead design architect Farshid Moussavi, structural engineer Hanif Kara, and landscape architect Thomas Woltz. They reviewed progress on the gardens and the key spaces and facilities, including the prayer hall, blackbox theater, social hall, the open air eivans, and administrative offices.

he Princess Louise, first daughter of Louis-Philippe, Duke of Orléans, then King of the French, was keen on politics, a prolific letter writer and trained in the arts, history, languages and sciences. Princess of France, then first queen of the Belgians, she became the protagonist of the emergence of the new kingdom whose voice would quickly join the concert of European nations.
The eldest daughter of a modern and united family of ten children, she shares with her younger brother Henri d'Orléans, Duke of Aumale, heir to the Château de Chantilly, born ten years after her, strong inclinations towards artists and aesthetics. .
At the Château de Chantilly, an exhibition is dedicated to this little-known figure, who died far too young (at 38). Renewed research, unpublished documents and unknown masterpieces, notably from the royal collection of Belgium, make it possible to put this icon of Belgian royalty back in its rightful place.
After Queen Mathilde, who discovered it in preview during the sovereigns' state visit to France, HRH Princess Esméralda of Belgium and a hundred personalities responded to the invitation of Prince Amyn Aga Khan to an inauguration dinner set up in the heart of the Galerie des Batailles.
