Prince Rahim visits Mozambique

Image

Following his visit to Dubai, last night, Prince Rahim arrived in Maputo for a three-day visit, during which he will meet senior state officials and leaders of the Jamat, and attend the inauguration ceremony of the Aga Khan Academy Maputo.

Prince Rahim’s visit began at the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Welfare for a meeting with Minister Nyeleti Brooke Mondlane. The Minister congratulated Prince Rahim on the inauguration of the Aga Khan Academy Maputo, as she fondly recalled her childhood, when she and her siblings attended Aga Khan schools in neighbouring Tanzania.

Prince Rahim also visited the Presidential Palace in Maputo, where he met with President Filipe Nyusi. Prince Rahim conveyed Mawlana Hazar Imam’s greetings and warm wishes to President Nyusi, and acknowledged the long-standing relationship between the Ismaili Imamat and Mozambique.

They discussed matters of mutual interest, including socio-economic development efforts in Mozambique, the presence and activities of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), and plans to strengthen the formal relationship between the Ismaili Imamat and the Republic of Mozambique in the future.

AKDN agencies have been present in Mozambique for over two decades, working to improve quality of life in the country and wider region, through the areas of education, health, tourism, agriculture, civil society, and infrastructure.

Milestone AKDN projects include the rehabilitation of the historic Polana Serena Hotel, one of Africa’s grandest hotels; a Coastal Rural Support Programme that supports entrepreneurship and skills development in the country’s poorest northern districts; and the Moztex garment factory, which employs and trains over 700 staff, more than 90 per cent of whom are women. AKDN’s projects in Mozambique have directly reached over half a million beneficiaries since 2001.

Prince Rahim then travelled to the Parliament building to meet with Esperança Laurinda Bias, President of the Assembly of the Republic. The President thanked Prince Rahim for his visit to Mozambique and praised the work of AKDN in the country, especially in the Cabo Delgado province.

This evening, Prince Rahim will visit the Presidential Palace Ponta Vermelha, official residence of the President, where he will be the Guest of Honour at a state banquet hosted by President Filipe Nyusi in honour of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the President of Portugal, who is also visiting Mozambique.

Prince Rahim tours historic Maputo Jamatkhana

Image

Situated in the heart of Mozambique’s capital, along the Indian Ocean coast, Maputo Jamatkhana stands as a monument to the long history of the Ismaili community in southern Africa.

Since the 1940s, it has served as a central hub for the Jamat in Maputo, and has received many dignitaries over the past eight decades. Its latest guest was Prince Rahim, who toured the building and grounds earlier today.

The Jamatkhana, located a stone’s throw away from the old city’s baixa commercial district, is easily identified by the words Edificio Sua Alteza Aga Khan, or Building of His Highness the Aga Khan, that adorn its central clock tower.

Upon arrival, Prince Rahim was welcomed by Amin Rawjee, President of the Ismaili Council for Mozambique, as the Imamat flag stood raised atop the Jamatkhana. Prince Rahim met with leaders of the Ismaili community and toured the historic Jamatkhana’s spaces, gardens, and religious education classrooms.

The building first opened in 1941 to offer a space for the Jamat who had migrated from South Asia and settled in the port city of Maputo. By the 1960s, the community’s population had grown, and a larger space was needed. Work began on extending the main building in 1963.

The Jamatkhana extension was completed in 1968 and inaugurated by the then Governor General, Dr Baltazar Rebelo de Sousa, father of the current President of Portugal, Professor Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

Later in the day, Prince Rahim visited the Aga Khan Academy Maputo ahead of its official inauguration tomorrow. He spent time with teachers and staff of the school and toured the Academy campus and facilities, including the state-of-the-art science building, sports hall, and newly completed commons building.

Yesterday evening, Prince Rahim was a Guest of Honour at a state banquet hosted by President Filipe Nyusi in honour of President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, held at the Presidential Palace Ponta Vermelha, official residence of the President.

In their remarks at the banquet, both President Nyusi and President de Sousa paid tribute to Mawlana Hazar Imam and the efforts of the Aga Khan Development Network to improve quality of life in Mozambique and around the world.

The Aga Khan Academy in Maputo is part of a network of Academies established by Mawlana Hazar Imam. It is accredited as an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, and features state-of-the-art facilities, a multicultural student body, and an experienced team of educators and staff.

Hosted at the school’s newly opened Commons building, the inauguration was attended by students and staff of the school; government and state officials; representatives of faith communities, businesses, and civil society; and leaders of the Jamat and AKDN.

In his remarks, Prince Rahim spoke of the vision of the Academy and the Aga Khan Curricular Strands which make the school unique.

“As a centre of excellence,” he said, “this Academy will equip its students with the tools needed to be competitive and to thrive, as they go on to their universities and then enter the arena of adult life. And it will teach them to push themselves to be the best they can possibly be.”

The Aga Khan Academies aim to develop future leaders with the skills and knowledge to support positive development in their societies. To achieve this, they recruit exceptional young people from all backgrounds regardless of socio-economic means, and provide them with the highest international standard of education.

“The wide geographic spread of the Academies is by design,” said Prince Rahim, “to allow students and staff to seamlessly travel to Academies in other countries, see different cultures, and build an appreciation and a love for them.”

Maputo’s Academy comprises 336 students, who represent 23 nationalities from across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and North and South America. All students are encouraged to become intellectually curious, globally-minded citizens of the world with strong ethical values to complement their academic ability.

“Ethics are taught here not just in theory, but put into practice in elements of service and of leadership in the student's daily lives,” Prince Rahim explained. “The Aga Khan Academies intend for their graduates not to be good at subjects only, but good as individuals.”

President Filipe Nyusi commended the presence of an Aga Khan Academy in Maputo, along with other ongoing AKDN initiatives in the country.

“We have been following the positive impact of various socio-economic projects undertaken by the Aga Khan Development Network, which greatly contribute to the progress of Mozambique, in line with our country's own development programme,” he said.

In his remarks, President Rebelo de Sousa commented on the long-term vision and work of Mawlana Hazar Imam to establish the Aga Khan Academies. He also commented on the historical strength of the Jamat in Mozambique.

“In Mozambique the Ismaili community is very strong, very dynamic, and very brave,” the President said. “This Academy is a recognition of the valuable presence of the community here.”

He also addressed the students in the audience. “Being part of this Academy is a unique opportunity and privilege in your lives,” he said.

Prince Rahim joined President Nyusi and President Rebelo de Sousa as they unveiled the inaugural plaque before taking a tour of the Academy campus.

The school’s buildings and grounds are purpose-built to provide world-class facilities for students and staff. These include classrooms with state-of-the-art technology, well-equipped libraries, extensive sports facilities, and spaces for arts, music, and performance.

The Academy in Maputo joins a network of existing and planned schools of excellence around the world. The first opened in Mombasa, Kenya in 2003, and the second in Hyderabad, India in 2011. The Academy in Dhaka, Bangladesh will open later this year.

Prince Rahim Aga Khan reaffirms AKDN’s commitment to the people of Afghanistan

Afghanistan Conference 2022, 31 March 2022 – Prince Rahim Aga Khan today affirmed the “unfailing commitment of the Ismaili Imamat and the AKDN to the people of Afghanistan,” at a virtual conference convened by UN Secretary General António Guterres to address the country’s humanitarian crisis.

Speaking on behalf of His Highness the Aga Khan, Prince Rahim urged the international community to act swiftly to support the UN’s humanitarian appeal.

“Since August, despite huge challenges, in cooperation with UN agencies, the Aga Khan Development Network has maintained its life-saving work across Afghanistan: keeping its hospitals and clinics open; assisting communities with food, shelter and livelihoods; and continuing to help thousands of children of both genders to access learning,” he said.

“Our experience over the past three decades, along with generous support from many international partners, has taught us to believe deeply in the capacity of Afghans, in their pluralism, and in the strength of their vibrant, diverse communities. They have shown time and again that they are resilient and resourceful, but today, they need help.”

He urged the international community to also address urgently the causes of the current crisis – economic collapse, banking and monetary paralysis, and the strangulation of legitimate Afghan businesses and jobs. Afghanistan’s future will be determined at the community level, Prince Rahim observed: “It is there that Afghans of all backgrounds will come together to address their most urgent needs. ”

The High-level Pledging Event on Supporting the Humanitarian Response in Afghanistan was held, virtually, at the ministerial level. It focused on securing scaled-up resources to address the unprecedented level of humanitarian needs in Afghanistan, where more than 24.4 million people require assistance, and raising awareness of other challenges critical to the survival of Afghanistan’s people.

Prince Rahim Aga Khan SPEECH 2022-03-31

Post by Admin »

Statement by Prince Rahim Aga Khan at the virtual Afghanistan Conference 2022

VIDEO SPEECH: http://ismaili.net/timeline/2022/2022-0 ... nistan.mp4

Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Rahim

Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,

On behalf of His Highness the Aga Khan, I thank the Governments of Germany, Qatar, the United Kingdom, as well as the United Nations, for convening this meeting at a time when so many Afghans are in peril.

Since August, despite huge challenges, in cooperation with UN agencies, the Aga Khan Development Network has maintained its life-saving work across Afghanistan: keeping its hospitals and clinics open; assisting communities with food, shelter and livelihoods; and continuing to help thousands of children of both genders to access learning.

That is a sign of the unfailing commitment of the Ismaili Imamat and the AKDN to the people of Afghanistan. Our experience over the past three decades, along with generous support from many international partners, has taught us to believe deeply in the capacity of Afghans, in their pluralism, and in the strength of their vibrant, diverse communities. They have shown time and again that they are resilient and resourceful, but today, they need help.

That is why we urge the international community to support the UN’s humanitarian appeal with generosity and speed. But it must also address the causes of this crisis – the economic collapse, banking and monetary paralysis, and the strangulation of legitimate Afghan businesses and jobs. These deserve equally urgent and practical attention.

Today, we must send a signal of hope to Afghans across the country, and especially at the community level where Afghanistan’s future will be determined. It is there that Afghans of all backgrounds will come together to address their most urgent needs. Let us act swiftly in solidarity, with foresight and with compassion.

Thank you.

The meeting offered an opportunity to discuss matters of mutual interest, including the international context in regions of the world where the Ismaili Imamat and the Holy See have a strong presence, the activities of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) around the world, and the relationship between the Ismaili Imamat and Portugal. In particular, they discussed pathways of cooperation for the improvement of the quality of life of populations in Lusophone countries and in other regions of the world.

Monsignor Peña Parra is visiting Portugal to inaugurate venues for the celebrations of World Youth Day, due to take place in Lisbon in August 2023, and to lead the ceremonies to commemorate the apparitions at the Shrine of Fátima (Mary). During his visit, he will also meet with the President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and Prime Minister António Costa.

Prince Karim Aga Khan’s son donates $10m for flood victims

Deeply indebted to His Highness the Aga Khan for this contribution, says PM Shehbaz

News Desk September 04, 2022

As unsparing floods cripple the country's infrastructure, the spiritual leader of the Ismaili community, Prince Karim Aga Khan’s son Prince Rahim on Sunday announced a donation of $10 million to the floods victims.

$5 million will be donated directly to the Government of Pakistan while a further $5m will be provided to the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) agencies in the country, which are engaged in the relief efforts.

The donation comes following a discussion on Sunday between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Prince Rahim Aga Khan, Chair of AKDN’s Environment and Climate Committee and eldest son of His Highness the Aga Khan, the 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims.

"Deeply indebted to His Highness the Aga Khan for contribution of $10 million for the flood victims in Pakistan," Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif wrote on his Twitter handle.

"In a telephonic chat with Prince Rahim Aga Khan today, I requested His Highness to play his role in raising awareness about flood situation in the international community," he added.

According to details, during their telephonic conversation, Prince Rahim discussed the damages caused by the floods. He expressed his concerns over the loss of lives and property due to the devastating floods.

Prince Rahim said, “I am deeply concerned about the impact of the current floods in Pakistan, which have been intensified by the effects of climate change. These floods, and the many other weather events we are experiencing around the world, require us all—governments, businesses, communities, and individuals—to redouble our efforts to combat the climate crisis which threatens to engulf us. The institutions of the Ismaili Imamat have been mobilised to support the government in its relief and rehabilitation efforts.”

He further said that they had advised development organisations affiliated with the Aga Khan network to take part and assist the government in carrying out relief and rescue operations.

Thanking Prince Rahim for his donation, he admired the Aga Khan network's participation in different development projects.

Record monsoon rains and melting glaciers in Pakistan's northern mountains have brought floods that have affected 33 million people and killed at least 1,290, including 453 children. The inundation, blamed on climate change, is still spreading.

Manchar Lake, which is used for water storage, has reached dangerous levels and the increased pressure posed a threat to surrounding areas in southern Sindh province, Sindh Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro said.

Aside from historic rainfall, southern Pakistan has had to contend with increased flooding as a surge of water flowed down the Indus river.

The country has already received nearly three times the 30-year average rainfall in the quarter through August, totalling 390.7 millimetres (15.38 inches). Sindh province, with a population of 50 million, was hardest hit, getting 464% more rain than the 30-year average.

PM Shehbaz on Sunday appealed to UNICEF and other global agencies to help control child deaths. "As Pakistan battles one of the worst climate-induced calamities, among the most adversely affected are children," Sharif said on Twitter.

On Sunday, flights carrying aid from UNICEF, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates landed in Pakistan.

Prince Rahim represents Mawlana Hazar Imam at Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral

Following an invitation from Buckingham Palace, Mawlana Hazar Imam requested Prince Rahim to represent him at the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, which took place today. Prince Rahim attended the Committal Ceremony held at Windsor Castle this afternoon.

The Committal Ceremony was attended by members of the royal family, individuals from other royal families, close friends, past and present members of the Queen’s household, Governors General, and Realm Prime Ministers.

Mawlana Hazar Imam and Her Majesty enjoyed a close and warm relationship, in continuation of that between the British monarchy and the Ismaili Imamat across earlier generations. She bestowed the title of His Highness upon Hazar Imam in 1957.

They shared a deep interest in horses. Her Majesty's first racehorse was a wedding present from Mawlana Sultan Mahomed Shah in 1947, and her most recent Group One winner was gifted by Hazar Imam on her 80th birthday.

Her Majesty hosted a dinner in honour of Hazar Imam at Buckingham Palace on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee in 2008, and welcomed him to Windsor Castle to commemorate his Diamond Jubilee in 2018.

His Majesty King Charles III and Mawlana Hazar Imam also enjoy a close friendship. His Majesty is aware of Mawlana Hazar Imam’s work and the Jamat’s presence in the UK and the Commonwealth. The King and the Queen Consort accompanied Mawlana Hazar Imam during a tour of development projects in the Northern Areas of Pakistan in 2006. In 2010, Hazar Imam welcomed His Majesty to a reception at the Ismaili Centre, London, to celebrate its 25th anniversary. In 2018, His Majesty graciously opened the Aga Khan Centre in London in the presence of Mawlana Hazar Imam, and paid tribute to the Ismaili community, saying:

“I have always had the greatest admiration for the Ismaili community's emphasis on intellectual and cultural exploration as a means of integration, and your determination to discharge your obligations as citizens of this country while maintaining your own special and distinctive traditions.”

After the church service at Westminster Abbey, the Queen’s coffin travelled in procession to Windsor Castle. Members of the Ismaili Volunteer Corps lined up near the Ismaili Centre in South Kensington, and along the Great West Road near West London Jamatkhana, to pay their final respects as the hearse passed.

Commitments to improve quality of life of vulnerable peoples, with a focus on climate change announced today

VANCOUVER, BC, Sept. 29, 2022 /CNW/ - The Ismaili Imamat and the Province of British Columbia today signed an Agreement of Cooperation committing to advance joint efforts for development work in B.C. and around the world.

An immediate project to be implemented will be between the Climate Action Secretariat of British Columbia and the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat to assess climate change adaptation and long-term risks and opportunities in South and Central Asia.

Representing His Highness the Aga Khan, Prince Rahim Aga Khan said: "British Columbia has been a leading voice in the fight against climate change. Its institutions, companies, and organisations, both public and private, are at the cutting edge of critical knowledge in areas like environment, climate change, and sustainability. It is our hope that in this spirit of partnership, we can identify new solutions that bring value to British Columbia, Canada, and indeed the world".

"Fighting climate change requires an all-hands-on deck approach. With this historic agreement, we are sharing B.C.'s Climate Change Adaptation Model with the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat, which will help assess climate risks in South and Central Asia regions that are impacted by catastrophic flooding," said Premier John Horgan. "Together, we are building on a long history of collaboration between B.C. and the Ismaili Muslim community, making life better for people around the world."

The agreement with the Ismaili Imamat comes as 50 years of history of the Ismaili community in Canada is celebrated this year. In keeping with the mandate of his role as Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, the Aga Khan has worked to improve the quality of life of all people regardless of their birthplace, background or religious belief.

Ismaili Imamat and British Columbia sign Agreement of Cooperation

Prince Rahim and Princess Zahra represented Mawlana Hazar Imam and *Imamat* the constitutional entity of the Ismaili community

A special ceremony and luncheon in Vancouver to sign the Agreement of Cooperation between the Ismaili Imamat and the Province of British Columbia.

“The agreement reinforces the Imamat’s permanent commitment to this province, and, alongside similar partnerships already in place with Alberta and Ontario, to this great country,” said Prince Rahim in his remarks at the event, hosted along the waterfront in downtown Vancouver.

“First among the challenges and risks that face humanity today is the climate emergency in all its dimensions,” he added. “The recent devastating floods in Pakistan, for example, illustrate the urgency of the situation.”

“British Columbia has become a leader in the fight against planetary breakdown. Its institutions, companies, and organisations, public and private, are creating new knowledge and identifying innovative solutions in the areas of environmental stewardship, climate adaptation, sustainability, and many others.”

Premier of British Columbia John Horgan signed the agreement on behalf of the Province
“Today we talked about the challenges of inequality, we talked about the challenges of climate change and the impact it has on civil society, on families, and individuals,” said Premier Horgan.

“Only by working together collectively, multilaterally, globally, can we address these challenges and what I've learnt in my time in getting to know the Ismaili community here in British Columbia is that all of us stand ready to take on that challenge.”

Janet Austin, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, hosted a luncheon in honour of the signing.

“I’m so pleased to see this relationship developing and deepening, in terms of how we can help to address climate change and adapt for the future,” said Lieutenant Governor Austin. “This accord will surely deepen and endure over time, anchored as it is, in our vision for a better world for all, and our shared commitment to cooperation and mutual learning.”

She also paid tribute to the Ismaili community for playing a full part in the fabric of Canadian society and for making the country its home. “Thank you for all that you have contributed over the past 50 years and for all that we can accomplish together in the next 50,” she said.

Addressing guests at the luncheon, Princess Zahra applauded Canada for accepting Ismailis and other communities “with characteristic warmth, openness, and humanity” after they faced expulsion from East Africa 50 years ago. They were later joined by many others from all parts of the world.

“It would have been easier just to say no. But Canada welcomed those and other refugees with open arms and generosity,” she said to the assembled audience. “I believe that that has contributed to the rich tapestry that defines this country today.”

Princess Zahra also underlined the importance of a commitment to openness and equality of opportunity as the world faces increasing migration due to conflict, natural disasters, climate change, and poverty.

“Canada has shown that with clear intent, intelligent policy, considered leadership, and humility, it is possible to create the right conditions for people to flourish together,” she said. “It is my father’s wish, which I’m sure we all share, that the Ismaili community’s experiences here over the past five decades be an inspiration for other communities around the world.”
