@AgaKhanMuseum New Interactive Exhibition: What's Your Sanctuary?
How have you found sanctuary during the COVID-19 lockdown?
Calling all art lovers: the Aga Khan Museum invites you help create a new art display charting how people in our community have found sanctuary during the COVID-19 pandemic.
We warmly welcome you to send us a photograph or short video (15 seconds or less) that speaks to what — and who — gave you comfort, stability, belonging, and hope during this challenging time. Please include a short testimonial or poem (of 25 words or less) about the sanctuary represented in your photo or video.
Your sanctuary doesn’t have to be a place. It could be an activity, a cherished memory, a work of art, your faith, or something else entirely. We also encourage you to submit a picture of yourself with a person who has given you sanctuary during this time. When snapping your picture, make sure to respect physical-distancing rules, so you and others stay safe!
Our Museum team will collect the entries and create a display to feature in our Museum. This new collection of community-generated art will serve as a companion to the Sanctuary exhibition when the Museum reopens later this year.

Reaffirming our commitment to pluralism
As a museum, we join people around the world in expressing our rejection of all forms of racism and violence. We reaffirm our commitment to pluralism and to challenging systematic marginalization based on race or ethnicity. Our programs and activities seek to help people learn about and experience the heritage, history, and cultures of different civilizations. It is through a better knowledge and appreciation of different civilizations that we hope to promote a society which celebrates pluralism and diversity and where discrimination has no place.

Reignite a sense of wonder
https://mailchi.mp/75394e1f33f9/reignit ... d857cac673
Dear Friend,
We’re all living under a new normal, but a better, kinder, more connected way now feels within reach – we need only to imagine it.
Here at the Aga Khan Museum, our team is working hard to reimagine what that new way forward looks like. We’ve adapted our programming to better reflect our new normal and to ensure our visitors are able to safely reconnect after too long in isolation.
We're so pleased that the Museum reopened on June 27th. But we need your help to make sure we can provide all the inspiring and restorative programming we have planned for you.
If you are able, could you consider a gift of $50 or $100 to help us provide programming that will spark healing and joy, and foster connection when we all need it most?
Every dollar raised between now and August 11 will be matched, up to a total of $40,000, thanks to the unbelievable generosity of Kumi and Abdul Pirbhai, Bayview Hospitality Group, Jim Fleck, and an anonymous donor.
We have big plans for our new programming, aptly titled “Rebuild 2020,” anchored on themes that include: Remember, Reconnect, Reimagine and Rejoice.
Your gift today will:
- Give people a meaningful outlet to remember and pay tribute to essential workers and those we’ve lost, through four arts-based community projects
- Provide a safe place for people to reconnect by hosting community picnics on our extensive grounds
- Host a series of online talks where renowned artists tackle the question: “How do we reimagine the world in the wake of such change and what is the role of art and artists?”
- Give people the chance to rejoice and experience live performances for the first time in months.
I know it seems ambitious, but we strongly believe that our Museum has a pivotal role to play in reigniting a sense of wonder among our audiences — from young and old, local to global.
That’s why we’re calling this donations campaign “Reignite” — and we can’t do that without you.
Ultimately, our hope is that these new initiatives will bring people to the Museum, help them to experience the joy of art and encourage them to discover the diverse global flavours of Islamic art and culture.
I invite you to reignite a sense of wonder with us and make this hope a reality.

A personal thank you
Dear Friend,
I am overjoyed and deeply moved by the outpouring of support we received for the Aga Khan Museum’s Reignite campaign.
We may be operating under a new normal, but one great constant has always been the spirit of generosity of our supporters.
Thanks to the overwhelming support and generous contributions of 871 donors – alongside our matching donors Kumi and Abdul Pirbhai, Bayview Hospitality Group, Jim Fleck and an anonymous donor – we far exceeded our campaign target.
Together, we raised $284,995 – and surpassed our original goal of $200,000 and our stretch goal of $250,000 in the last week!
The generosity of our donors will enable us to, safely and thoughtfully, continue presenting exhibitions, programs and performances that are a source of wonder, hope, healing, inspiration and joy.
In these unprecedented times, this has never been more important.
After all, we know that art in its most potent forms has the power to renew spirits and communities, connect cultures and facilitate a shared sense of humanity.
On behalf of all of us here at the Aga Khan Museum, we sincerely thank everyone who contributed to Reignite, particularly at this challenging time.
It’s because of this support that we will be able to reignite a sense of wonder, community and connection with visitors across the Greater Toronto Area, across North America and beyond.
We truly couldn’t do it without our incredible community of donors and visitors.

Sincerely,
Henry S. Kim
Director and CEO
P.S. If you would like to support Reignite, it's not too late to contribute https://agakhanmuseum.org/support/donat ... n=reignite. Thank you for your support.

Lecture: The Persian Romance of Alexander the Great with Prof. Michael Barry
Setting out to conquer the Persian Empire in 334 BC, Alexander the Great lamented that no poet would narrate his history and adventures. Yet, more than 1,000 years later, Alexander was re-identified as "Iskandar" by Persia's two greatest epic poets: Firdausi and Nizami. Join historian and professor Dr. Michael Barry as he bridges the concepts of art, mysticism, and poetry in this 2016 talk exploring the blending of sober history with heroic tales.

I want to express my sincere thanks to you for joining us at this year’s Lapis Digital Benefit. When the Museum was forced to close in early March, we were faced with rapid changes and much uncertainty, along with the rest of the world. In those most difficult moments, we used art in its various forms to connect with our community and spread a message of hope.
The Lapis Digital Benefit was just one more way we have continued to innovate and respond to our new reality. The event brought together thousands of people from over 40 countries to celebrate diversity and pluralism through inspiring conversations and stunning performances.
Through the generosity of our sponsors, donors and global community we raised $856,000 (and counting) in support of Rebuild 2020, the Museum’s reimagined programming and exhibitions that will reconnect and reinvigorate communities through the arts.
If you would like to relive the excitement of the Lapis Digital Benefit again, please click here. You may log in and restream the event until October 5, 2020, and make a donation if you would like to.
Thank you again for making out first-ever Lapis Digital Benefit such a resounding success.
We continue to be inspired and humbled by your support, and hope you will join us as we move forward in our mission to provide a welcoming, safe haven for the public in the wake of our forever changed world.
Sincerely,
Robert A. Baker
