Advancing development in Mozambique
The Aga Khan Development Network hosted a reception in Maputo, Mozambique, last month, to celebrate Imamat Day with guests and members of the Jamat, and to raise awareness of AKDN’s work in the region.
The event, held in the gardens of the Polana Serena hotel, was attended by the Official Representative of the Government of the Republic of Mozambique, Vice-Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, Engineer Victor Tauacale.
Also in attendance were government dignitaries, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of international organisations, members of religious groups, and leaders of business, academia, and civil society. The event was also honoured by the presence of Her Excellency the Secretary of State of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Government of the Portuguese Republic, Dr Teresa Ribeiro.
Mr Tauacale took the opportunity to acknowledge the role played by AKDN in Mozambique, saying that “The Aga Khan [Development] Network has been an important partner for the development of Mozambique and we would like to reiterate our appreciation of intervention, whose contribution complements our Government's efforts in its primary objective of promoting the improvement of well-being and of the living conditions of our populations,” highlighting also “the actions developed in the education sector by the Aga Khan Foundation at the Agrarian Institute of Bilibiza in Cabo Delgado, the Aga Khan Academy in Matola, among others, which have contributed to the frank development of the country.”
He also took the opportunity to thank the support and solidarity provided by AKDN and Jamati institutions during and after the tragic passage of the tropical cyclones Idai and Kenneth.
The AKDN Diplomatic Representative in the Republic of Mozambique, Mr Nazim Ahmad, also addressed guests, taking the opportunity to explain the work of the Ismaili Imamat and Aga Khan Development Network, stating that “AKDN Mozambique employs 1,243 people, of which 98% are Mozambican and 62% are female, and has invested since 2001 approximately 300 million US Dollars.”
Mr Ahmad also shared the progress achieved through the AKDN’s programmatic work in Mozambique. AKDN agencies have been present in Mozambique for many years, working towards achieving the considerable potential for progress and socio-economic development in the country, specifically in the areas of tourism, agriculture, education, health, civil society, and infrastructure.
The Aga Khan Foundation has been present in Mozambique since 2001, benefitting over 800,000 Mozambicans in the areas of agriculture and food security, health and nutrition, early childhood development, financial inclusion, education, and civil society.
The Moztex textile factory, under the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development, has been operating since September 2008 at a free zone industrial park. Its operations started with a training school, and nearly 2,000 people have been trained since 2008. Today, Moztex employs 752 employees. In 2018, its production was approximately 2.4 million pieces of exported garments.
In addition, the Aga Khan Academy in the Province of Maputo has been operating in its fifth academic year since 2013 with the International Baccalaureate curriculum. The Academy includes a residential student programme and is currently comprised of 147 students. Linked to its academic programme, the guiding principles of the Aga Khan Academies involve five crucial strands: Ethics, Pluralism, Economy for Development, Cultures, and Governance and Civil Society. The Academy, which is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years, will have capacity for 300 residential and 450 daytime students.

Imamat Day
Foremost among the principles of the Shia Ismaili Tariqah of Islam is the recognition of the Imam of the Time. Imamat Day is an occasion to reaffirm this principle, express gratitude to Mawlana Hazar Imam, and to reaffirm our spiritual allegiance to the Imam and our commitment to the ethics of the faith.
Sixty-three years ago, on 11 July 1957, Mawlana Hazar Imam succeeded his grandfather, Mawlana Sultan Mahomed Shah, as the 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims.
In keeping with the 1,400-year old tradition of Muslim leadership, covering all interpretations of Islam, Mawlana Hazar Imam has guided his murids in matters of faith and worked tirelessly to improve the quality and security of their lives. This latter concern extends not only to the Ismailis but all those who share their lives – locally, nationally and internationally.
Mawlana Hazar Imam's vision, as well as the Imamat's institutional capacity to catalyse human development, have been widely recognised by governments, international organisations and civil society institutions. Today, the Ismaili Imamat's privileged relationships with many of these, enhance its capacity to contribute to human development on a global scale.
It is through the leadership and guidance of the Imam-of-the-Time that the Jamat has been able to respond effectively to various challenges, and emerge as a resilient community. Today, our Jamat and its institutions, under Mawlana Hazar Imam’s visionary leadership, are making significant contributions to the societies where we live.
Imamat Day is an occasion to reaffirm our allegiance and gratitude to Mawlana Hazar Imam for his benevolence and guidance, and to renew our commitment to the ethics of the faith. On the occasion of the 63rd anniversary of Mawlana Hazar Imam's accession to the Ismaili Imamat, The Ismaili extends warmest Imamat Day wishes to all Ismaili Muslims around the world.

Statement by the Prime Minister on Imamat Day
July 11, 2020
Ottawa, Ontario
The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Imamat Day:
“Today, Ismaili Muslims in Canada and around the world will celebrate Imamat Day. This day marks the 63rd anniversary of the accession in 1957 of His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan as the 49th hereditary Imam – spiritual leader – of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims.
“The Aga Khan has devoted himself to improving the lives of all people, regardless of their origin, background, or faith. His tireless work, through the Aga Khan Development Network, has advanced humanitarian causes, promoted health and education, especially for women and girls, in some of the poorest regions of the world, and encouraged us all to be more active and engaged in our communities.
“The values that His Highness promotes – pluralism, compassion, and respect for diversity and human rights – are those that we Canadians hold dear. We are proud to have bestowed honorary Canadian citizenship on the Aga Khan, and are honoured to be the home of both the Aga Khan Museum and the Global Centre for Pluralism. The Centre’s work continues during COVID-19, as it plays a leadership role to advance diversity and pluralism at a time when the health, social, and economic impacts of the pandemic are compounding existing inequalities in our society.
“Ismaili communities in Canada are working to support our response to COVID-19, with volunteers providing thousands of cloth masks to essential workers, over 10 tonnes of non-perishable food items for food banks, and vital blood donations in support of National Blood Donor Week. These are perfect examples of Ismaili Canadians’ long-standing commitment to volunteerism, and the core values of peace, compassion, and care for the vulnerable. And today, even as the celebrations will look different due to COVID-19, we still take the time to acknowledge this work and the other important contributions that the Aga Khan and Ismaili Canadians have made to the richness and diversity of our country.
“On behalf of our family, Sophie and I extend our best wishes to His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan and thank him for his important work in Canada and around the world.
“Khushiali Mubarak!”

Message President NC - Imamat Day 2020
Message from the President of the National Council for Portugal on the occasion of the celebration of the 63rd anniversary of Imamat of our beloved Mawlana Hazar Imam.
[Português]
My dear sisters and brothers,
On my own behalf and on behalf of the Institutions in Portugal, Spain and Angola, I wish my warmest and most fraternal Mubarak on this auspicious occasion of the 63rd anniversary of the Imamat of our beloved Mawlana Hazar Imam.
Mubarak to everyone!
This year has been a year of great challenges for all of us. The current global situation has contributed to great changes in our lives. We had to adapt to a new context, we had to maintain the physical distance from our loved ones and we had to temporarily close the Jamatkhanas. But with the guidance of our beloved Mawlana Hazar Imam, who even today blessed us with the Talika Mubarak, all our difficulties and challenges become less difficult, for which we give our Shukarana.
Also, recently, we have been blessed with the reopening of most of the Jamatkhanas in our Jurisdiction. This event allows us to pray again in congregation, and to hope that this situation will be quickly overcome. But we must not forget that it is also up to each of us to do our part. Therefore, I take this opportunity to remind you that it is very important that we behave responsibly and continue to follow strictly the indications of the health authorities. Now, more than ever, we must look after not only our own health but also the health of all those close to us.
This year we can celebrate Imamat Day through The Ismaili TV, so I invite all Jamat to participate in the global Jamat celebrations which will take place on the.ismaili/tv throughout this weekend. This program prepared especially for all of us includes music, stories, reflections and memories of special moments that Jamat has already had the opportunity to experience. This is a way for us to stay together and celebrate this moment as One Jamat.
In this special occasion, we also share with the Jamat of the whole Portuguese Jurisdiction that, as we already have for the Jamats of Portugal and Angola, today we officially launch a Newsletter with contents specially prepared for the Jamat of Spain. We hope you enjoy it!
Finally, I would like to thank all the volunteers who directly or indirectly contribute to the well-being of the Jamat in various areas. Your service is fundamental and I pray that you will be rewarded multiple times for your exceptional work. I appeal again to Jamat to always follow the directions of our volunteers at Jamatkhanas.
On this Imamat Day, I pray that we will be blessed with the continued grace and love of our beloved Mawlana Hazar Imam and that he will help us to face this challenging moment in the best possible way. I also pray that all our brothers and sisters of the global Jamat are blessed with much peace and health.

Khushiali-365
Imamat Day 2020 Edition
JollyGul.com has launched a new service "Khushiali-365" with the inaugural presentation of Imamat Day 2020 Edition.
What is Khushiali-365 service? On every Khushiali, there are a number of devotional song videos produced by our talented artists, hard-working institutions as well as enthusiastic Jamati members. The videos get published in different places and by the very nature of the Internet are scattered all over the place.
What Khushiali-365 service does is create an organized place where the videos can be easily located by different celebrations. The videos will play on the respective publishers' YouTube channels. Khushiali-365 will only make it easier for the viewers to locate the videos by celebration, for example "Imamat Day 2020".
The goal of the service is threefold. One, to make it easy for the Jamat to discover, enjoy and recollect past happy occassions any time of the year. Secondly, this would hopefully serve as a reference source for artists and producers to check and do some quick research to see what has been produced in the past when they embark on new Khushiali video projects. And third, we hope to motivate content producers who are just starting out and concerned that their work does not get the exposure it deserves - we are here to highlight your efforts. So for our next Khushiali, Salgirah 2020, let us all start getting into high gear!
The Khushiali-365 service relates mainly to video content published on YouTube where there is open access without any registration or membership. JollyGul.com will also pen an editorial on every Khushiali Celebration. The specific edition for every Khushiali will be published one month after the celebration has passed. And if we have missed any content, artists and publishers can contact us through our website to ensure its inclusion and help make our presentation as complete as possible.

Ethics in Daily Life - Episode 6

Mawlana Hazar Imam encourages us to embrace a common origin of humanity while acknowledging and respecting its diversity. The gift of ethical literacy and decision making in all aspects of our daily lives is a true reflection of our faith.
Salgirah
On 13 December 2020, Ismailis around the world will celebrate Mawlana Hazar Imam’s 84th birthday — an occasion to reflect on the unique spiritual bond that links each murid to the Imam-of-the-Time.
Throughout history, Ismaili Muslims have been led by a living, hereditary Imam-of-the-Time descended from the progeny of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) through his cousin and son-in-law, Hazrat Ali, and his daughter, Hazrat Bibi Fatima.
On 13 December 2020, the global Jamat will celebrate the 84th birthday of our present living Imam, His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan. Born in Geneva, Switzerland in 1936, he succeeded his grandfather to become the 49th Imam at the age of 20.
During over six decades of his Imamat, Mawlana Hazar Imam has devoted himself to the spiritual and worldly progress of Ismailis everywhere. Throughout this time, he has also been recognised as an influential and respected leader on the world stage, by virtue of his commitment to peace, hope, and upholding the dignity of humankind.
The celebration of Hazar Imam's birthday is an occasion for Ismailis to reflect on the unique spiritual bond that links each murid to Hazar Imam. It also affords the Jamat an opportunity to express its love, loyalty, and devotion to the Imamat, which binds the Ismaili community together as one.

Ismaili community adapts birthday celebrations for spiritual leader, the Aga Khan
The spiritual leader of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims turns 84 on Sunday

Burnaby, B.C., couple Shiran and Shiraz Chatur look forward every year to Dec. 13, when they celebrate the birthday of their spiritual leader with prayer, feasts and festivities. This Sunday is no exception.
The birthday of the Aga Khan — who turns 84 this year — is one of the most important dates in the calendar for approximately 100,000 Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims across the country. It is an occasion to celebrate and reflect on the benevolence of their leader and how they, too, can give back.
While those celebrations usually bring community members together in person, COVID-19 public health restrictions have rendered it impossible for 2020. However, despite the physical distancing requirements, hundreds of community volunteers have worked to make sure people are still connected virtually.
Shelina Dilgir, spokesperson for the Ismaili Council for B.C., is one of those many volunteers.
Shelina Dilgir, spokesperson for Ismaili Council for B.C., says connecting with people virtually has been, in some ways, a way to get to know community members better as conversations can be deeper than small talk during in-person events. (CBC)
When the pandemic first began, the global Ismaili community launched its own television streaming program, which has beamed content into homes since March. Dilgir said over 300 virtual programs have already taken place and have included seniors' aerobics classes and health and financial informational programs.
"It's amazing that after all these months, the drive and the momentum and the passion continues to be there," said Dilgir.
To mark their spiritual leader's birthday, Dilgir said festive programming will begin Friday, leading up to the Sunday occasion and will include cooking shows, musical performances and arts and crafts segments to engage families with children.

The Chaturs say the virtual celebration is giving them hope in an otherwise bleak time.
"It makes up for what we're missing," said Shiraz Chatur.
While they will not be able to gather this year for morning prayers at their local Jamatkhana — Ismaili Muslim places of worship — connecting with people virtually is offering some solace.
The pair plan on having a family Zoom celebration where, according to Shirin Chatur, they will make rounds of phone calls to friends and family instead of dropping by dressed in their finest, as is usually the custom.
"I'm a bit sad that we can't meet with our friends, that we can't hug and kiss them," said Shirin Chatur, who will nonetheless be cooking a celebratory meal at home.

And Dilgir says those living alone have not been forgotten.
She and many other volunteers have been reaching out to those among the 15,000 members of the community in B.C. who may need help with supplies or just need someone to talk to.
In the spirit of the day, she said volunteers will also be dropping off donations to women's shelters in the province.
"His Highness, the Aga Khan, has spent his entirety of his life giving back [to] those who are less fortunate, those who are marginalized — really promoting global peace and pluralism," said Dilgir. "It's our opportunity to pause and reflect on all that he has done and to renew our faith and commitment.

Statement by the Prime Minister on the birthday of His Highness the Aga Khan
December 13, 2020
Ottawa, Ontario
The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, issued the following statement marking the birthday of His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan:
“Today, we join Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims in Canada and around the world to celebrate the 84th birthday of their spiritual leader, His Highness the Aga Khan.
“A global humanitarian, the Aga Khan has made it his mission to build a better, more peaceful world. In a year where we have seen inequalities compounded by the effects of a global pandemic, His Highness has continued to work to help reduce poverty, advance gender equality, and improve health care and education. Whether through his Global Centre for Pluralism in Canada or the Aga Khan Development Network, his tireless efforts have helped make Canada, and the world, more inclusive.
“The Aga Khan shares many of the values Canadians hold dear, including kindness, compassion, and respect for diversity. In a world often fraught with division, His Highness has continually worked to bring people together. His unwavering dedication to helping others is an inspiration to us all. For these reasons, he was named an honorary Canadian citizen and invested as an honorary Companion of the Order of Canada.

“Today, Sophie and I thank the Aga Khan for his outstanding leadership. We wish him continued health and happiness on this special day and for years to come.
“Salgirah Khushiali Mubarak!”

It notes that progress is sometimes frustratingly hard to get and can be two steps forward, one step back - all the more reason why firm, selfless and visionary leadership is so important.
