A young Ismaili artist, Sarah Haji, from USA, presents an original song, "Noori Nazare" to celebrate the upcoming Diamond Jubilee of Mawlana Hazar Imam. The gist of this song is that Mawla's arrival brings with it an abundance of blessings, and creates a glowing feel all around.

Performer: Sarah Haji
Original Music and Lyrics: Kamal Haji

Saj Gaye Noori Nazare

Shukr Tera Ya Shah-e-Umam
Ata Ki Tu Ne Nazr-e-Karam
Tere Saaye

Saj Gaye Noori Nazare

First musical tribute of the Diamond Jubilee released today

TheIsmaili.org

1 June 2017

With 40 days until the inauguration of Mawlana Hazar Imam’s Diamond Jubilee, TheIsmaili is pleased to unveil a musical tribute composed by Salim – Sulaiman and performed by Ismaili artists from around the world.

The video rendition of the song “honours 60 years of Mawlana Hazar Imam’s glorious Imamat,” says Sulaiman Merchant, “and offers an expression of deep gratitude through the musical voices of Ismaili artists from all corners of the world.”

The first of many devotional songs that are expected to be released in the course of commemorating this milestone anniversary, the music video features dozens of Ismaili musicians and singers from Australia, Canada, India, Iran, Kenya, Pakistan, Tajikistan, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. They perform in a variety of settings, singing in different languages and playing a range of musical instruments.

“In making this video, we wanted to show the diversity of talent in the Jamat, and demonstrate the harmony and strength that comes from joining together,” says Salim Merchant. “And the beauty of that diversity can be seen and heard in the final production.”

For the Merchant brothers, the song is also part of their personal commitment to nurture a living tradition of devotional music that appeals to a new generation of Ismaili youth.

“When you think of Mawla’s Silver Jubilee and Golden Jubilee, it is impossible not to recall the loving lyrics and tunes of geets from Silver Melodies, Shaan-e-Karim and so many others that spring to mind, a lot of them also composed by our dad, Sadruddin Merchant,” says Sulaiman. “Music has always been part of how the Jamat celebrates its love and devotion for the Imam.”

Salim adds that “this tribute brings that tradition forward in a way that mirrors the reality of the Jamat of this Jubilee — an Ismaili community which is more global and more connected than ever before.”

“It is a precious tradition,” he says, “and it is our privilege to help carry it forward.”

MY JOURNEY AT THE AGA KHAN ACADEMY

INTRODUCTION

BY ZIYAAN VIRJI
(Current status: Student, Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa, Kenya)

I wrote the poem, below, about my journey at the Mombasa Aga Khan Academy in commemoration of His Highness the Aga Khan’s Diamond Jubilee.

The Aga Khan Academies (AKA) are a system of schools being built up by Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness the Aga Khan, in nations across South and Central Asia, Africa and the Middle East. With an emphasis on the Approaches to Teaching and Learning (ATL) strategies and skills that permeate the International Baccalaureate (IB) teaching and learning environment, the Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa, is the first to be propelled by Mawlana Hazar Imam’s vision that education provided at the academies should enable young people to develop the capacity to become future leaders of civil society.

Two others academies are operating in Hyderabad, India, and Maputo, Mozambique. Eventually the network of Academies will form a global learning community of 14,000 boys and girls studying at 18 schools in 14 countries. Each year, approximately 1500 exceptional students will graduate from these academies.

I have a hidden love for poetry, and it is my desire to use the literary medium to educate and enlighten readers around the world about my school, and how it has positively contributed towards my development as a person. The poem also reflects the skills my beloved 49th Imam wishes us to attain, and shows what an institution created by the Imam is like. As a young man, I hope that readers will support me in my passion for poetry.

MY JOURNEY

BY ZIYAAN VIRJI

Ziyaan Virji Flower 2s

Like a seed that would never grow into a plant,
I came
Although a fruitful seed,
never exploited to the correct necessities
No proper soil or water,
until came a point where they said I have no possibilities
But then light shone on me,
it was time to reclaim

With good teachers and facilitators,
soil and water was gradually provided
Through the affable people,
I adjusted
Facilities and opportunities wouldn’t be regarded
as a need anymore
A seedling I grew as,
something they would adore

Aga Khan visits Academy Staff in Mombasa s

Like the detrimental pests,
came the emotional breakdowns too
But with the joyful environment created,
I would simply breakthrough
AKA strands, ATL skills,
Profiles and Attributes,
was the regular water
I would intake to be the best of me

Although I’m just a unique seedling
in this colossal garden,
away from my original roots,
but the pluralistic and diversity present in every recruit,
wouldn’t allow anyone to use family as a madden

Through the constant motivation and leadership opportunities,
I’ve grown
I’ve grown into a young plant
from a seed that once was equal to a stone
Through the good nurturing,
I’ve cultivated into a plant that stands up for himself
But that’s not where it ends

Ziyaan Virji Flower 1s

Although I’ve become a young plant
With many leaves and flowers,
I’ve to face the world,
The world that will step on me
And the world that will adore me
I will strive to become enormous one day,
and when I do
Just like my gardener taught me,
I will emanate back to where my roots really are
And ripen my garden into a huge forestry one day

TRIBUTE TO HAZIR IMAM: THE ABSOLUTE LUMINAR

When we born we are just human beings with no distinctions of religion and sect. Then gradually our parents convert us to their respected religion and then to their sect. Then comes the teaching and learning phase in which parents play an important role in guiding their children about their religion and acts and concept of their sects. My parents did the same. Taught me and my siblings each and every basic thing to face and live in community. I belong to ISMAILI sect. We follow our Imam “PRINCE KARIM AGA KHAN”, HE’s the 49th IMAM of Ismaili community. He’s the descendant of MOLA ALI (A.S). HE got HIS Imamat on July 11, 1957. He was only 20 years old, when he succeeded his grandfather, SIR “SULTAN MUHAMMAD SHAH”. I will not go deep because we all are well aware of HIM. HIS services and institutes are not hidden from anyone. Why I am writing this article because I want to express my feelings for HIM. To be honest I had done HIS deedar when I was 4-5 years old, at this age normally a child don’t remember anything but I remember, I do remember all the arrangements and I remember HIS face, I remember HIS smile, I remember HIS walk, I remember each and everything. He’s the spiritual parent of mine and our all. He’s the complete personality, HE’s flawless, HE’s innocent, and HE’s pious. I want to praise him in my own way

A: ACCOMPLISHED
B: BREAD FROM HEAVEN
C: CAPTAIN OF OUR SLAVATION
D: DOOR TO HEAVEN
E: ETERNAL
F: FOUNTAIN OF LIVING WATER
G: GLORIOU
H: HOLY SPIRIT
I: INDWELLING
J: JUDGE
K: KING
L: LIGHT
M: MOST HIGH
N: NEVER FAR AWAY
O: OMNIPOTENT
P: PERFECT
Q: QUICK TO HEAR OUR PRAYERS
R: RADIANT
S: SHEILD
T: THE TEACHER
U: ULTIMATE
V: VAST
W: WISE
X: EXCELLENT
Y: YEARNS FOR US
Z: MY A TO Z and ZEALOUS

These words are drop in oceans. I have much more to write about IMAM. I can write a book on IMAM. My love for HIM has no bound. HIS ever green smile is too much charming. Radiant light emerges whenever he smiles. In my every difficulty I take his name and I literally get rid of that difficulty. He’s my mentor, spiritual parent. Every time I watch HIS videos I get goose bumps. My eyes starts filling up with tears. My heart starts pounding fast and my anxiousness for seeing and meeting him increases. I can’t brief my feelings in words; words are nothing in front of my feelings. The biggest wish of my life is to meet him once. For once I want to meet him and want to talk to him, want to see him want to serve him. I know IMAM knows and understand my feelings better. He will surely let me achieve my desire. Wishing IMAM a very heartiest “DIAMOND JUBILEE, and hope to see HIM soon (INSHAALLAH). May MOLA accept my tribute.

Poem Zafira Kassam: Someone is coming…

SOMEONE IS COMING…

Can you hear that?
A unique symphony –
the cadence of rain
prelude privy murmurs
of seniors’ acknowledging:
“dharti naram thai chhe
ena Kadam Mubarak vaaste”
(Earth is becoming tender
that may His feet not meet arid ground)

And can you feel it?
the soil once parched, now
softens, quells;
a bride perched on the precipice –
avidity and precipitation,
such is the wait;

Someone is coming…

Even nature adorns her lushest green.
Can you see that?
The euphoric zest
with which Nairobi rejuvenates;
the rush to prepare, to accommodate,
to cater, to appease, to please –
blinking lights festoon the walls;
blooms and decorations deck the halls;
the hustle and bustle of Volunteers;
the surge of Congolese, South Africans,
Malagasy, Burundians and Rwandans –
oh, how the city comes alive!

Can you hear that?
The day packed with
the cacophony of networks connecting,
committees in continual assembly,
discussions abound, deadlines accomplished;
The evening abuzz with
zikr in brimming jamatkhanas,
the spiritual musicality sublime
elevating the soul supreme;
The night resonant with
the clackety-clack of dandia sticks,
the chorus of catchy geets –
Mowla’s praises and chants
reverberating right into our restless dreams.

Someone is coming…

Someone is coming,
And we cannot wait
to see His beatific countenance –
those twinkling eyes, that dazzling smile,
His majestic frame cloaked
in the special Diamond Jubilee Khil’at
and astrakhan cap up top.

Someone is coming,
And we cannot wait
to hear His enchanting voice
infused with love and happiness
as He blesses us all to keep to Sirat al-Mustaqim
as He shares a joke or two to invoke laughter
as He coaxes the dormant spirit awake
inspiring love and compassion in the depths of us.

Someone is coming,
And we cannot wait
to feel the indescribable –
that fullness; a certain kind of contentment
in the very root of our consciences;
a cosmic-sized epicentre of gratitude
that overflows in our rendered tender hearts
and rivulets down the flushed cheeks;
a collective sense of transcendental bliss
that only you know and I know
cannot be captured succinctly in words.

He is coming…
We cannot wait,
but prepare we do
for our Lord and Murshid
to grace our humble home.

Karibu Kenya, Ya Shah Karim Hazar Imam!
