AMAZING STORIES
Staggering Numbers
About 36.5 million Europeans died between 1939 and 1945 from war-related causes, over half of them civilians, some six million of them Jews targeted for extermination by the Third Reich and its accomplices from Vichy to Vilnius. As the late Tony Judt observed in “Postwar,” his magisterial history of Europe since 1945, “No other conflict in recorded history killed so many people in so short a time.”

US: Baby born with half his head missing defies odds

http://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/world/us- ... lsignoutmd
A baby born with missing brain parts and skull has defied all odds and survived to celebrate his first birthday. Diagnosed with a severe brain developmental abnormality, microhydranencephaly, doctors had predicted little chances of the baby's survival.
Born on 27 August 2014, Jaxon Emmett Buell was only given a few days to survive. However he is now miraculously teething and saying his first words.
Jaxon's father, Brandon Buell, celebrated his son's milestone first birthday with his wife Brittany by sharing a note on a Facebook page dedicated to Jaxon.
"Jaxon has already shown how strong, smart, and special he is, accomplishing feats that doctors doubted he'd ever be able to do, shows improvements each and every day, and just reached a miraculous milestone in celebrating his 1st birthday," read the note on the Facebook page.
"His perseverance and strength already shown is why we are calling his inspirational story, 'Jaxon Strong'...Thank you for any and all gifts, support and prayers given to Jaxon and our family. #JaxonStrong."
The couple found out about the abnormality during Brittany's pregnancy and while they had the choice to abort the baby, they decided against terminating the pregnancy.
Weeks before his first birthday, Jaxon reportedly stopped sleeping through the night and upon examination at a children's hospital in Boston, it was revealed that he is suffering with microhydranencephaly.
He is now on new medication that allows him to sleep through the night.
"He's back to smiling at us, always so happy in the morning after he wakes up and takes turns looking at both Mommy's and Daddy's face, seemingly as if he is so excited to start another day," said Brandon Buell, reported NY Daily News.
"We believe the medical world will also benefit from Jaxon's story, from his rare neurological condition, and from his diagnosis, because we are certainly seeing firsthand how much there is still to learn about the human brain."
Meanwhile, social media users have poured in their support using #JaxonStrong.

Identical twins married to identical twins by identical twins

Guests could be forgiven for thinking they were seeing things at one very special wedding in Kerala, India, this week.
Identical twins Dinker and Dilraj Varikkassery married identical twins Reena and Reema, in a ceremony officiated by identical twins, after a five year search. The boys had been inseparable all through school, university and even their careers (working for the same company) until they were posted to different ends of India.
Afterwards, both men decided they wished to get married and set about finding identical twins – but it wasn’t easy and it took them five years to meet their now-wives, who had had a similar upbringing.
“When we met Reena and Reema, we knew it was them we were looking for all this while. Fortunately, they also had the similar feeling after meeting us,” Dilraj told the Mail Online.

PREGNANCY is often considered a time for women to put their feet up and take it easy. But hip-hop dance teacher, Christina Litle, is continuing to teach her vigorous body-popping routines – despite being seven months pregnant. Christina – who is now 35 weeks gone – has been criticised by strangers online, who have suggested her baby will be born disabled because of her energetic hobby. But despite a lack of medical assurance, the 28-year-old insists she isn’t putting the baby at risk and says there is a ‘stigma’ around pregnant women and now she has encouraged other mums-to-be to stay active by teaching a hip hop dance class to other pregnant women. Workers Find World's Biggest Snake in Malaysia
On Monday, construction workers conducting a flyover at a building site in Malaysia spotted what is believed to be the world's longest snake. The Guardian reported that the 26-foot-long reticulated python was found in a tourist area on Penang Island, hiding under a tree and laying eggs. The men soon captured the snake and took photos. After its capture, the snake reportedly laid one egg and fell "quiet," dying shortly after. A civil defense official told the BBC that the cause was likely stress related to the capture.

Identical Twins Give Birth at the Same Time on the Same Day: 'We Can't Wait for Them to Grow Up Together'
Identical twins Sarah Mariuz and Leah Rodgers have shared everything from clothes to toys over the years, but never did the sisters think they would give birth on the same day – let alone at the exact same time.
The 35-year-old women both welcomed their firstborn children into the world on June 30 at 1:18 a.m. in their respective cities. Rodgers gave birth to Reid Joseph in Denver, Colorado, one hour before her sister's baby, Samantha Lynne, was born in La Jolla, California.
"It's that magical twin connection I suppose," Mariuz tells PEOPLE. "There have just been certain things in our life where things just match up – it's odd."
She adds, "We didn't plan being pregnant at the same time. But our journeys aligned, even giving birth! Twins have a special bond, it's hard to explain."

Newly discovered 'world's oldest man' is 145-years-old but says he's ready to die
Slide show:
http://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/other/new ... ut#image=1
The world's oldest man has been named as an Indonesian who is believed to be a staggering 145-years-old – but who wants to die.
Mbah Gotho has emerged from obscurity with documentation recognised by Indonesian officials revealing he was born on December 31, 1870.
He has outlived all 10 of his siblings as well as his four wives, the last of whom died in 1988.
All of his children have also died, and now he is survived by his grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
If correct, that makes him significantly older than the verified oldest person in the world ever, a title that belongs to French woman Jeanne Calment, who lived to be 122.
The super-senior citizen from Sragen, Central Java, was recently interviewed by regional reporters, and he said he has been through it all and would not mind passing on.
"What I want is to die," he said. "My grandchildren are all independent."
Suryanto, Mbah’s grandson, said his grandfather has been preparing for his death ever since he was 122, but it never seemed to come.
He said: "The gravestone there was made in 1992. That was 24 years ago."
In addition, Suryanto said Mbah’s family has already prepared a gravesite for him - near his children’s graves.
Staff at the Indonesian records office say they have confirmed Mbah’s birthdate, which is specified on his Indonesian ID card as December 31, 1870.
Whether or not he will ever be listed as the world's oldest man however is open to question, as the paperwork has so far not been independently verified.
If so he will join to others without verifiable records who are purportedly older than Mbah - 171-year-old James Olofintuyi from Nigeria and 163-year-old Dhaqabo Ebba from Ethiopia.
These days, his grandchildren say Mbah mostly sits listening to the radio because his eyesight is too poor to watch television .
For the past three months, he has had to be spoon-fed and bathed as he has become increasingly frail.
When asked what his secret to longevity is, Mbah replied: "The recipe is just patience."

Conjoined twins given slim chance of survival prepare for first day of school
Conjoined twins who were given a slim chance of survival are now preparing for their first week at school.
Rosie and Ruby Formosa, aged four, from Bexleyheath in Kent, were born joined at the abdomen and shared an intestine, meaning they needed an emergency operation to separate them.
Their parents, Angela and Daniel Formosa were told their daughters had a minimal chance of survival when doctors discovered they were conjoined.
But after successful operation at London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital (Gosh), the identical twins have grown up healthy and will begin their first year of primary school in September.
Ms Formosa, 35, said the twins were “very excited” to be starting school.
“Four years ago it wasn't in my mind that this would ever happen,” she told the Press Association.

This Is How The World's Longest Tunnel Will Revolutionize Travel In Europe
A record-breaking tunnel through the Swiss Alps, set to change travel in Europe, was inaugurated this week.
The Gotthard base tunnel will enter the record books as the world’s longest railway tunnel, stretching 57km underneath the mountains of Switzerland.
It burrows deeper - 2.3km - than any other rail tunnel.
The railway will take the load of the one million lorries which carry goods across the route each year, helping to reduce air pollution in the region.
Once it opens for commercial service in December after 17 years of construction work, the two-way tunnel will take up to 260 freight trains and 65 passenger trains per day, the Associated Press reported.

A man divorced his wife after seeing her without make-up for the first time
Well, this is pretty much the harshest thing we've ever heard. A man divorced his wife just days after their wedding when he was 'exposed' to her natural, makeup-free face for the first time. He said she "did not look as pretty as before the wedding". The story emerged after a psychologist named Dr Abdul Aziz Asaf told Gulf News he had counselled the 28-year-old woman in question, who was evidently devastated about what had happened.

After 46 years, DNA evidence proves Virginia inmate’s innocence, attorneys say
When Sherman Brown was convicted and imprisoned in the brutal killing of a 4-year-old Virginia boy, the Vietnam War was still raging and Watergate was just a hotel, not a scandal.
Then 22 years old, he maintained his innocence at the time and as each decade faded into the next. Now, after nearly a half-century behind bars, Brown is petitioning Virginia’s Supreme Court, saying DNA collected from newly recovered evidence indicates that he could not have committed the murder.
Justices now will have to weigh whether that genetic evidence is strong enough to warrant overturning his 1970 conviction in Albemarle County, Va.
If Brown, 69, is exonerated, he would be among the longest-serving prisoners to be cleared of a crime in the history of Virginia and the United States. It would be an extraordinary turnabout for a man who was initially sentenced to death before the sentence was reduced to life.

WASHINGTON — Books come in all sizes, but one 15th century Quran was so enormous, it's said that a wheelbarrow was needed to carry it.
Two consecutive pages of this Quran will be on display during the show "The Art of the Qur'an: Treasures from the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts," which opens Saturday at the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery.
The sprawling pages, each measuring 5 feet by 7 feet, have rows of calligraphy standing 8 to 9 inches high. They date from about 1400, and have been on long-term loan with the Smithsonian museum.

The Best NASA Images of Earth From Space
Abstract art, or the planet we live on through a distant camera lens? It can sometimes be hard to tell. There's nothing like zooming out—way out—to generate wanderlust and appreciate the beauty of our home planet. And who better to offer that perspective than NASA, who for decades has been taking us further and further into space, paradoxically teaching us a little more about Earth with each foray. As space tourism becomes more and more feasible, expect your Instagram feed to get more epic. In the meantime, here are some of our favorite photos of Earth taken by NASA.

Man Pays $9 Million for License Plate
For drivers wanting to show off their prestige and wealth when hitting the road in the United Arab Emirates, it’s all about the license plate — the lower the single-digit number on the front of the government-issued plate, the better.
That’s why Indian businessman and Dubai property developer Balwinder Sahni just dropped 33 million dirhams — or $9 million — to purchase license plate No. 5 at a government auction in October, Bloomberg reports.
