Hijab- A Poem
It's so hard to get away from it all, because everywhere I go there I am........
What do you see when you look at me?
Do you see someone limited , or someone free?
All some people can do is just look and stare,
Simply because they can't see my hair.
Others think that I am controlled and uneducated.
They think that I am limited and not liberated,
They are so thankful that they are not me,
Because they would like to remain "free".
Well free isn't exactly the word I would've used,
Describing women who are cheated on and abused.
They think that I do not have opinions or a voice ,
They think that being hooded isn't my choice,
They think that the hood makes me look caged,
That my husband or dad are totally outraged,
All they can do is look at me in fear,
In my eye there is a tear.
Not because I have been stared at or made fun of,
But because people are ignoring the One up above.
On the day of judgement , they will be the fools,
Because they were too ashamed to play by their own rules.
Maybe the guys won't think I am a cutie,
But at least I am filled with more inner beauty.
See I have declined from being a guy's toy,
Because I won't let myself be controlled by a boy,
Real men are able to appreciate my mind,
They aren't busy looking at my behind..
Hooded girls are the ones really helping the Muslim cause,
The role that we play definitely deserves applause.
I will be recognized because I am smart and bright,
Some people are inspired by my sight.
The smart ones are attracted by my tranquilty,
In the back of their minds they wish they were me,
We have the strength to do what we think is right,
Even if it means putting up a life long fight,
You see we are not controlled by a mini skirt and tight shirt,
We are given only respect , and never treated like dirt,
So you see, we are the ones that are free and liberated,
We are not the ones that are sexually terrorized and violated.
We are the ones that are free and pure,
We're free of STD's that have no cure,
So when people ask you how you feel about the hood,
Just sum it up by saying "baby it's all good"
It's so hard to get away from it all, because everywhere I go there I am........

The sentiments of modesty, aversion to promiscuity, strength to live by ones principles and the appreciation of inner beauty as opposed to infatuation with external beauty expressed in the poem are admirable.
One can still express the above without putting on the Hijab by dressing modestly and behaving appropriately.

Burkha
Has anyone read Imam SMS Farmans about the Burkha.
On a personal note
If a South Indian man decides to wear a Lungi to work in Washington DC and then thinks that he is religious and is furthering the cause of his faith, what would you think of him and his "religious action"?
The wearing of Hijab has nothing to do with the faith of Islam to the best of my knowledge.
Islam has never been about what you wear and how you dress yourself.

Hijab Poem
How can you be active in sports like swimming, running, etc? You are restricted by wearing a Hijab. Does Islam restrict you from sports?

and there is NOTHING in the Quran about it, just about drawing your shawl over your bosom.
The hijab causes attention to be drawn to a woman, which in Islam is not a good thing.
It also makes the religion look bad to Christians. Nasty PR. It says, "Look at us. We are different. We refuse to assimilate. We hate your culture."

Object of Despair
A poem by Fahim Firfiray (Abu Omar)
Emma is a lawyer
And so is Aisha too
Colleagues going into court
At circa half past two
Its 1 O'clock right now
They grab a bite before the trial
They chat about this and that
Conversing with a smile
Aisha is in full hijab
With a loose all over suit
Emma's in her business wear
With accessories taboot
Emma's really quite bemused
At Aisha's godly ways
She looks Aisha in the eyes
And very firmly says
You're a smart girl Aisha
Why do you wear that across your hair?
Subjugated by "man"-kind
An object of despair
Take it off my sister
Let your banner be unfurled
Don't blindly follow all around
DECLARE YOUR FREEDOM TO THE WORLD
Aisha is amazed
But not the least bit shy
She bravely puts her milk shake down
And gives Emma the reply
My dear sister Emma,
Why do you dress the way you do?
The skirt you're wearing round your waist,
Is it really you?
Now that we've sat down,
I see you tug it across your thighs,
Do you feel ashamed?
Aware of prying eyes?
I see the way you're sitting,
Both legs joined at the knees,
Who forces you to sit like that?
Do you feel at ease?
I'll tell you who obliges you,
To dress the way you do,
Gucci, Klein and St. Laurent,
All have designs on you!
In the main, its men my friend,
Who dictate the whims of fashion,
Generating all the garb,
To incite the basest passion
"Sex Sells" there is no doubt,
But who buys with such great haste,
The answer is the likes of you,
Because they want to be embraced......
They want to be accepted,
On a level playing field
Sure, with brain and intellect
But with body parts revealed
Intelligence and reason
Are useful by and by
But if you want to make a mark
Stay appealing to the eye
You claim your skirt is office like
A business dress of sorts
Would we not laugh at Tony Blair
If he turned up in shorts?
His could be the poshest pants
Pinstripe from Saville Rowe
But walking round like that my friend
He'd really have to go
Why do you douse yourself with creams
To make your skin so milky?
Why do rip off all your hair
To keep your body silky?
A simple shower's all you need
To stay respectable and clean
The time and money that you spend
Is really quite obscene
Why do you wake up at dawn,
To apply a firm foundation,
Topped with make up and the like,
In one chaotic combination?
And if you should have to leave the house
Devoid of this routine
Why do you feel so insecure
That you should not be seen?
Be free my sister Emma
Escape from your deep mire
Don hijab today my friend
And all Islam's attire
Avoid all those sickly stares
Or whistles from afar
Walk down the street with dignity
Take pride in who you are
Strength lies in anonymity
Be a shadow in the crowd
Until you speak and interact
When your voice will carry loud
You're a smart girl Emma
Wear this across your hair
Don't be subjugated by "man"-kind
An object of despair
To use your very words my friend
Let your banner be unfurled
Don't blindly follow all around

Burkha or viel is not sign of freedom but it is the sign of slavery.
It is not an Islamic parctise and it is also not good for the health.
By dressing hijab it shows men are superior to women and women do not have rights to live freely and wear dress which she like and lead her life wearing a veil like a theif??
Why to hide to face from others? Wearing veil is against the Islamic concept of brotherhood according to which we are all brothers and sisters, it is against Islamic concept of Equality.
Some people argue that its blessing etc that fruits like orange, banana etc are naturally covered so women should also cover themselves? So is the value of women like fruits and vegetables? No more than that...
In the poem mention above one girl wears skirt
and other hijab.. See the difference, the one who wears skirt wear it because she like to wear it, she is free to wore it or any dress in which she feel her self more comfirtable and beautiful like she can wear top and pants,T shirt and pants,Shalwar kurta, frock,Sarhee,Ghahgra choli etc as per her wish and do or go whatever her wish.
Now the girl in hijab has to wore a veil like a theif wears..She has to hide her face from every unknown person without any logical reason, she can not shake hands with boys as she thinks it haram, she can not become as free or independent like other girls and has to stay in home as it is quote of Umar Farooq, the second Caliph that Women are creatures meant to be hidden [ so make them stay in home].
So now it is obvious from the example and any one can easily judge who is free? The girl who wears skirt or hijab ? Obviusly the girl in skirt is the answer.

Pir Shams in Ginan Eji duniya preet keejiye says that
Eji Purkh nari aik chey aney jhajhwa chey ghat halo chalo sarvey aik chey soho dharam ni vaat.
That means that men and women are one [equal status] although they are made differently [or have different looks] but the way to follow the religion is same for both.

Hi,
You are thinking me wrong I am college going student and am un married.
But thanks that you like my opinion. Actually girls have equal rights and thats why I wrote so..its not so much freedom but its a basic right. Why to wore veil and covere face like a theif who dont want to show his face and thats why hide it .
Ghagra choli is Indian traditional dress which is mostly wore in festivals like Diwali and Navratri while playing dandiya and garba etc. There are different names of this dress like lengha, chaniya choli etc. Its like a sharara but the difference is in ghagra choli top is short and in sharara top is long.
Shalwar kurta also called as Salwar kurta or Salwar kameez is popular dress among muslims in South Asia but also wore by others. Girls usually wear duppatta also along with this dress.

Freedom..freedom is a blessing unless it is not misused. Freedom is precious blessing and every one loves freedom so the girls and women also have freedom but there should not be misuse of freedom like here there is freedom of expression for every one in this website to post their own point of views. This is freedom but if some one post using abusing words and say thats freedom than its not freedom then it will be misuse of freedom.
If some one is in prison how can it be free? If women are in prison of veil how can they be free? In Afghansistan Taliban used to force women who used to wear veil Is that what freedom means? So non ismaili muslims in favour of hijab makes various poems mail etc that burkha gives freedom etc. Few days back I got mail that women in hijab is real beauty etc..the purpose of these types of articles or mail is to make fool people but actually people laugh while reading sensless things that women in hijab have more freedom or are more and beautiful from real sense etc
,the one who becomes fool by these tpyes of articles are only those people who love hijab thinking it good and valid points.
Imam Sultan Muhammad Shah in Memoirs of Aga Khan wrote that
I have always sought to encourage the emancipation and education of women. In my grandfather's and my father's time the Ismailis were far ahead of any other Muslim sect in the matter of the abolition of the strict veil, even in extremely conservative countries. I have absolutely abolished it; nowadays you will never find an Ismaili woman wearing the veil. Everywhere I have always encouraged girls' schools, even in regions where otherwise they were completely unknown. I say with pride that my Ismaili followers are, in this matter of social welfare, far in advance of any other Muslim sect

Guest you have quoted very nice hadith about status of women.
Imam Sultan Mohamed Shah in His Farman Said that,"Apney Ismaili deen main aurat ya mard sab barabar hain."
[Bhagmoya 21-9-1899]
According to the above mentioned Farman status of men and women is equal in Ismailism.
According to Ginan the relation between men and women is like that of brothers and sisters .so whats the need of viel now?
In Ginan Syed Imam Shah says that
Eji istree purush sarvey bandhva aney ben bhai no neiha

MUSLIM GIRL WINS BATTLE OVER DRESS Mar 3 2005
By Adrian Shaw
A MUSLIM teenage girl yesterday won a legal battle to wear her faith's traditional head-to-toe jilbab dress at school.
The Appeal Court in London ruled that 16-year-old Shabina Begum's school has illegally excluded her.
Shabina claimed she was denied the right to education and to practise her religious beliefs after she was told she could not wear the jilbab - which covers all her body except her hands and face.
Shabina said: "Today's decision is a victory for all Muslims who wish to preserve their identity and values despite prejudice and bigotry."
Muslim girls at Denbigh High, Luton, Beds, can wear the shalwar kameez trousers and tunic.
The Muslim Council of Britain said the ruling is a "landmark decision".

If a muslim girl won that case what it can be but just a foolishness......
We are told that for the sake of Knowledge if one have to go as far as China then one must go there and some girls think that without veil they will not go to school why??
The concept of hijab is against many Islamic principles like concept of brotherhood and sisterhood, equality of men and women etc
Read the Farman and decide youself why women must not wear burkha.....
Farman of Imam Sultan Muhammad Shah..Book Kalam-e-Imam-e Mubin
I dont have English translation therefore I am giving complete reference so if any one is unable to understand can check in their books.
Zanjibar 20/8/1899
"Bohot si aurtain apney chehray per burkha dali hain wo theek nahi............Aurtain apney deen bhayion ko duniya main na dekhay to aakhrat main inko kaisey pehchaney gi.Burkhey ka Farman kisi Imam ney ya Paigamber nai nahi kiya."
Hence from the above Farman it is clear that is not an Islamic Practise.
Now read what Imam said about it to Nonismailis about social evil of Hijab.Details are in history book of Noorum Mubin. In Aligarh Imam said
"Pardey ki Mohlik rasam say aurton ki Zehni taraqi ruk gayi."
There is also speech of Imam Sultan Mohamed Shah in Noorum Mubin in which He explained disadvantages of Hijab to musims which He made in All India Mohammaden Educational Conference.

There is also speech of Imam Sultan Mohamed Shah in Noorum Mubin in which He explained disadvantages of Hijab to musims which He made in All India Mohammaden Educational Conference.
<P>I believe that burqa or hijab shows that women are inferior to men. If women should be wearing such things, so should men. Men should control themselves not to look at women in wrong ways and women should not be tormented to wear hijab etc. in such hot weather just to show that they are religious. Religion is faith that's inside a person, and it's not what one wears.</P>

Aisha binte Talha was very beautiful and she was grand daughter of Abu Baker Sidiq the first muslim caliph. She never used to wear a veil or burkha. When her husband argued why she not wore hijab she replied beauty is the blessing of Allah and how can she thank Allah by hiding blessing of Allah in veil. I am thankful to God for making me beautiful physically so why should I hide this from others?

Women do not like wearing burqas but they do not like it without it.
Now how can u explain that? I suppose they feel naked without it, so they have no choice.

<P>I found this on another forum and I wanted share it:<BR><BR>"As readers are aware, the Saudi religious police... cane women who are showing an inch or two of ankle. In a recent demonstration of religious fervour, they pushed back girls fleeing a blazing hostel into flames because they were not adequately covered. Several girls died as a result." <BR>When I read this, I was shocked at the extent that conservative countries have gone in the enforcement of the hijab and cover. The hijab in the west, from what I have seen, has merely become a pretense of religious devotion. Many girls carelessly let the hijab hang loose with half of their heads exposed. I was wondering, if the quran does not say anything about the necessity of the hijab then how did it come along </P>

Hijab - In Today's News
Wed Aug 3, 2:09 PM ET
LONDON (AFP) - A leading moderate Muslim in Britain advised women against wearing the Islamic veil for safety reasons in the aftermath of the London bombings.
A woman wearing the hijab in the present circumstances could suffer aggression from irresponsible elements. Therefore, she ought not to wear it," said Zaki Badawi, chairman of the Council of Mosques and Imams and head of the Muslim College in London.
The Egyptian-born leader made the call amid fears that Muslims could be targeted in a backlash over the July attacks.
London's Metropolitan Police said faith hate crimes were up 600 percent on the same period last year after the attacks.
"In the present tense situation, with the rise of attacks on Muslims, we advise Muslim women who fear being attacked physically or verbally to remove their hijab so as not to be identified by those who are hostile to Muslims," said Badawi.
The July 7 attacks were perpetrated by four British Muslims.
They blew up themselves and 52 others in three blasts on the London Underground and one on a bus.
A repeat attempt by another gang of four men failed when the bombs failed to detonate fully.
Badawi said the Koran justified removing the hijab, as it instructed women to dress so they could be "identified and not molested".
"The preservation of life and limb has a much higher priority than appearance, whether in dress or in speech," he added.
Badawi was denied entry to the United States with no explanation a week after the deadly attacks but accepted an unreserved apology offered later.
He was due to speak in New York on the law and Islam.

Islamists demand Bangladeshi women wear veil
Fri Dec 9, 2005 10:57 AM GMT
DHAKA (Reuters) - A banned Islamist militant group blamed for a series of bombings in Bangladesh has threatened to kill women, including non-Muslims, if they do not wear the veil, a statement said.
The statement by the Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen came hours after Thursday's suicide bomb attack in a northern town that killed at least eight people, the latest of a series of blasts blamed on militant groups in their campaign for an Islamic state.
"Women will be killed if they are found to move around without wearing burqa (veil) from the first day of Jilhaj," the Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen said in the statement sent to a Dhaka newspaper office.
Jilhaj refers to the Arabic month beginning early January.
"Women, including non-Muslims, are hereby advised not to go out of home without burqa. Seclusion has been made compulsory for you," said the statement in Bangla language, a copy of which was obtained by Reuters on Friday.
The group, which wants the introduction of sharia laws in mainly-Muslim Bangladesh, also ordered women students at Dhaka University not to step out after sunset, prompting police to increase security around the campus.
Earlier, a police officer said 30 suspected members of the Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen and another outlawed group, Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh, were arrested for involvement in a wave of bomb attacks that have rattled the impoverished nation this year.
A dozen bombs were seized in raids across the country, the official said, as police hunted for the leaders of the two outlawed groups.
Two bombs exploded on a crowded street in the northern town of Netrokona on Thursday, killing eight people and wounding 50, many on their way to work.
A suicide bomber was believed to be among the dead, while another was found wounded with an unexploded bomb strapped to his body.
"These bombers are enemies of Islam and must be stopped," said an official at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, adding the government had asked clerics to spread the message from the nation's 250,000 mosques.
Thursday's deaths took the number of people killed by suspected suicide bombers to 28 in three weeks, including judges, lawyers and policemen. At least 150 people have been wounded.
Bangladesh is the world's third-most-populous Muslim country after Indonesia and Pakistan.
State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfuzzaman Babar said last month that Islamists had formed a 2,000-strong suicide squad to press home their demands.

Baby, it's all good! - A modern hijab poem

What do you see when you look at me
Do you see someone limited, or someone free
All some people can do is just look and stare
Simply because they can't see my hair
Others think I am controlled and uneducated
They think that I am limited and un-liberated
They are so thankful that they are not me
Because they would like to remain 'free'
Well free isn't exactly the word I would've used
Describing women who are cheated on and abused
They think that I do not have opinions or voice
They think that being hooded isn't my choice
They think that the hood makes me look caged
That my husband or dad are totally outraged
All they can do is look at me in fear
And in my eye there is a tear
Not because I have been stared at or made fun of
But because people are ignoring the One up above
On the day of judgment they will be the fools
Because they were too ashamed to play by their own rules
Maybe the guys won't think I am a cutie
But at least I am filled with more inner beauty
See I have declined from being a guy's toy
Because I won't let myself be controlled by a boy
Real men are able to appreciate my mind
And aren't busy looking at my behind
Hooded girls are the ones really helping the Muslim cause
The role that we play definitely deserves applause
I will be recognized because I am smart and bright
And because some people are inspired by my sight
The smart ones are attracted by my tranquility
In the back of their mind they wish they were me
We have the strength to do what we think is right
Even if it means putting up a life long fight
You see we are not controlled by a mini skirt and tight shirt
We are given only respect, and never treated like dirt
So you see, we are the ones that are free and liberated
We are not the ones that are sexually terrorized and violated
We are the ones that are free and pure
We're free of STD's that have no cure
So when people ask you how you feel about the hood
Just sum it up by saying, 'Baby its all good'
