Man is dominated by his self's desires and fears. Those who are ensnared in this habitual impulses are out of harmony with the Divine Nature, and thus ill. As a result of this illness, feelings become disturbed and accordingly, thoughts and perception becomes unsound. Thus one's faith as well as one's knowledge of the Truth strays from what is real.
In order to follow the way of Perfection, one must first rectify these incorrect thought processes and transmute one's desire and fears. This is accompolished by coming into harmony with the true interpretation of Imam's guidance which is normally comprises of spiritual poverty, devotion and the selfless rememberance of God. In this way, one comes to perceive the Truth as it really is.

Whenever I heard this firman, it makes me sad and take me to the deep thinking. We should check ourselves that where we stand.
Excessive Materialism
These are all relevant and pertinent reflections on our present plight. I think we khojas have been exposed to excessive materialism and have been spoilt in many respects. Mowlana Sultan Muhammad Shah had these words for his murids in Iran:
"I have my followers in Iran who are known as Khaloos. If they said they were Ismailis, they would be put to death. They observe TAQUIA. Such are my true Murids. In spite of the dangers they face in that country they continue to practice the Ismaili faith secretly and preserve the religious traditions. They never fail prey to the deceiving tricks of the Satan. They have neither heard my Firmans nor have they had my Zaheri Didar; but they always have my Batuni Didar and never follow the path of the devil.
See how my Arab, Syrian and Khaloo Murids live in places where the rulers are non-Ismailis. They suffer great persecution at the hands of the enemies. They live in places where they are in very small minority but they remain firm on their religion and do not renounce their faith."
"LOVE HAZAR IMAM"
"You will have no fear in this world if you love the descendants of Muhammad and Ali. This one hint includes all the beauties of prayers and religion."
-IMAM MOWLANA SULTAN MUHAMMD SHAH
Hopefully through contacts with other jamats we will get a better perspective of life. It will make us aware that there is much more to life than our families and worldly attachments. That even in the midst of trials and tribulations there is happiness. This is one of the strengths of diversity.

Paul Brunton in one of his essays titled "Is the Soul in the Heart" in his book " Essays on the Quest" explains very beautifully the feeling of God in the heart and its significance in the overall realization (gnosis - maarifa) of God. I am not sure whether you have read it because you did mention him in one of your posts. I found this essay very enlightening in regards to the understanding of 'Dil'. In some other Ginans 'Bhamar Gufa' is mentioned as a place of light. Paul explains that as well.

Re: Dil
Dil is nothing but is a higher consciousness of our very existence, The lower conciousness is our mind. It is the dwelling of both nafs and soul. But interestingly, the soul repels the mind. Now the question is who is governing the heart? Soul or Nafs. Due to our physical existence, we need dil to actualize or activate our soul or you can say to awaken the consciusness of our self. It is the Dil who holds the higher consciousness of our self.shamsu wrote:YAM

Now I correct the farman you mentioned: " Tamari paasaethi ame na tau jan mangiye chhiye na tau maal mangiye chhiye, faqat tamaru dil mangiye chhaiy". Now what type of Dil? So Mowla say further "Tamaru dil deen ooper hoi tai mujab tamaiy amel kero taiy mangiye chhiye". So Mowla want Dil from Momin which is filled with firman ( Here din means firman) and act according to firman. That is why mowla says "Tamaiy Dil maa vichar kero". If we think why mowla says like this because normally we think from our mind not by our heart. It means think with the mind of mowla ( Mowla's mind is Momin's Heart) because " momin na dil ni khubi aiwi chhaiy kaiy amaiy taina dil ma rahiye chhiye". Now if momin dil is fiiled with mowla's firmans or bol or we can say rememberance of God which is not mental remeberance but rememberance of heart which open us to the inner world and keep our attention focused pn our invisible goal.
By rememberance with heart ( Meditation), we just fill the heart with the feeling of love and then drown any thoughts in the heart. Emptying the mind, we create an inner space where we can become aware of the presence of the beloved. He is always there ( In your heart) but hte mind, the emotions, and the outer world veil us from Him.Drowning the mind in the heart, we offer to Him our own consciousness, that spark of his Divine Consciousness which is His gift to Humanity. A stage comes when everything silent and only Ishq govern to all domains not even the heart. "Ishq to haida ma thi nipje aiy tau haido kori khai". Due to creation of ishq from the heart caused by that remeberance, he even eat away the heart, its very consiousness, and keep alone as duality plaque him.
To clean Dil means to get remove the occupation of Satan (Nafs) ON Dil.
