YOU CAN HELP

Visualise this scenario:

You are watching television, and see shocking images of poor hunger-stricken villages and destitute malnourished children suffering on account of inadequate food supplies. You wish there was a way you could help, but are always sceptical about making online donations, and don’t know what you can do to save the innocent children you saw on TV.

Sounds familiar?

As an alternative to making direct contributions towards food aid programmes, www.freerice.com has come up with an innovative way to raise funds that can be directed towards food aid.

It works like this:

The interface of the FreeRice website is simple. You are presented with a word, and your task is to select its definition from the multiple options available.

For each correct answer, you donate 20 grains of rice, which are in turn distributed to hungry people. Sponsors who advertise on the non-profit FreeRice site cover the cost of purchasing the rice you donate.

The website thus provides a dual-pronged effective means of raising the standard of your English, while making a meaningful, cost-free contribution to humanitarian efforts.

Students and other members of society who do not fall within the income-earning section of the population may hence be empowered to make a difference to the lives of others.

In summary, it’s a great way to make effective use of your time and knowledge.

On a related note, several ‘click to donate’ sites operate using a similar revenue-generating scheme, whose proceeds are directed towards an increasing range of charitable organisations.
